Extractions: This article is about architecture as referring to buildings; for other meanings of the word see computer architecture software architecture information architecture The Parthenon on top of the Acropolis, Athens, Greece Architecture is the art and science of designing buildings . A wider definition would include within its scope the design of the total built environment, from the macrolevel of town planning urban design , and landscape to the microlevel of furniture and product design . Architecture, equally importantly, also refers to the product of such a design. According to the earliest surviving work on the subject, Vitruvius De Architectura , good building should have Beauty (Venustas), Firmness (Firmitas) and Utility (Utilitas); architecture can be said to be a balance and coordination among these three elements, with none overpowering the others. A modern day definition sees architecture as addressing functional, aesthetic, and psychological considerations. However, looked at another way, function itself is seen as encompassing all criteria, including aesthetic and psychological ones. Architecture is a multi-disciplinary field, including within its fold

Extractions: This document describes the system architecture of the RS/6000 Enterprise Server Model S80. Special attention in this edition is given to the newly developed copper technology RS64 III processor. The major components; processors, memory, I/O subsystem, and the interconnecting buses are all described. Most of the components used are new designs and contribute to the continued outstanding balanced performance, reliability, and scalability of the "S" family of RS/6000 systems. Introduction The IBM RS/6000 S family consists of the new S80 and the earlier S70 and S70 Advanced Systems. The S family is IBM's RS/6000 symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) server family for high-end commercial performance. In addition, it is ideally poised for the future in that it supports both 32-bit and 64-bit applications running concurrently. It uses the new copper technology enhanced PowerPC RS64 III processor and is offered in 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-way configurations. The S80 also includes a greatly enhanced set of central electronic complex (CEC) support logic. More specifically, the memory controller complex was dramatically updated. The S family was the first RS/6000 system to exploit the true 64-bit large memory addressing capabilities of AIX 4.3. The S family also has a rich set of reliability features.

Extractions: Back The Freeman Foundation has given $237,500 to extend our capacity to support higher education in China and Southeast Asia. This generous grant will help to provide new books for university libraries, and college scholarships for some of the neediest students. We are building two Web sites to coordinate these efforts and mobilize further support. The first site, BOOKSAIL, will let libraries in China and other countries list their needs, and let donors around the world buy books that match them. Large collections will be purchased - in law, medicine, architecture, science and engineering, and other critical fields - by spreading the costs over very large numbers of donors. When BOOKSAIL reaches critical mass, it will operate without external funding and continue to provide thousands of new books and journals over the long term. The second site, DONORSCLUB, will let donors give scholarships in China, Vietnam and other countries. It will solicit small donations from individuals worldwide. and aggregate those gifts to create $500-1500 grants for students who have passed their entrance exams but cannot afford to enter school. These projects will be breakthroughs for the people and places we serve: they will fill hundreds of libraries with up-to-date materials, and let thousands of students finish college. They will also recruit thousands of donors to the cause of international development, and demonstrate new uses of the Web for person-to-person giving, with applications to other communities and causes.
Extractions: Click to enlarge Our design though, takes as it's starting point the very narrowness of the Clyde at the city centre. We propose to bridge the river with a structure so slender and elegant that at it's centre it looks impossibly thin and without visible means of support. Our bridge is free from the imagery of cable and arch which characterise new bridges from Bilbao to Dublin to Manchester and we have created a new structure which will be unique to Glasgow. This bridge will take you across the river, of course but will also connect you to the points on the rivers edge that were previously unreachable; to new jetties and beautifully landscaped gardens which link back seamlessly to the new structure and across the river. Creating special places on the north and south of the Clyde where you can enjoy the beauty of the river in a new setting.

Extractions: MASTER OF URBAN DESIGN PROGRAM The University of Michigan is located in a region that has many large cities with possibilities for study, research and engagement (Detroit, Chicago, Toronto, Cleveland, Grand Rapids, Toledo, etc). There is an urban revival currently underway in these and other cities with an influx of new commercial and residential development. As a large industrial city on the rebound, Detroit is an excellent laboratory for urban design research, practice and service. URBAN DESIGN IN RELATION TO OTHER PROFESSIONS The program is designed to bridge architecture and urban planning. These two fields, both professions with well-established bodies of knowledge, have overlapping interests, yet there is a general lack of linkages between the two fields. Architecture, both as a discipline and a culture, prides itself on a long history of aesthetic and technical creativity and virtuosity. The architect has traditionally balanced invention and personal expression against budget, convention and context. Twentieth century modernism has placed a high premium on experimentation, innovation and originality and the cult of the master architect has been heightened by the media in recent decades.
