Extractions: Skip navigation The mission of the California Breast Cancer Research Program is to eliminate breast cancer by leading innovation in research, communication, and collaboration in the California scientific and lay communities. In 1993, breast cancer advocates from across California converged on Sacramento to demand a new breast cancer research funding agency dedicated to supporting high impact research. From this activism the California Breast Cancer Research Program was born. Since its inception, the CBCRP has distributed nearly $150 million for more than 500 grants to more than 60 leading research institutions throughout California, so that they can investigate ideas about breast cancer that might not otherwise be explored. The state income tax return (form 540) allows residents to make a donation to the CBCRP from their tax refunds or to add a contribution to their tax bill. Tell us what you consider most important about the job we do and what might best accomplish our mission.

Extractions: In May 1985 I had a left-breast mastectomy after being diagnosed with stage ductal carcinoma. Over the next two years I explored reconstruction options and then proceeded with reconstruction. During the course of the experience I took many photographs of myself documenting the different stages and the changing bodily landscape. This document is a narrative of my experience combined with many of these photographs. I created this Web project in the hopes of demystifying the process and providing an educational as well as encouraging resource for others faced with breast cancer and for their friends and loved ones. Except as noted, I made the photographs myself using either a Nikon 35mm camera or a Hasselblad medium-format camera. I am 56 years old and live in Providence, Rhode Island with eight cats. All of the small photographs in the following narrative can be clicked on to produce larger copies of the same images. Part One : Diagnosis and mastectomy Part Two : What now? The structure of the female breast is important in understanding this cancer: The interior of the female breast consists mostly of fatty and fibrous connective tissues. Breast cancer is either noninvasive (generally known as in situ, that is, confined to the site of origin) or invasive (spreading). Noninvasive Breast Cancer Noninvasive breast cancers include the following: Ductal carcinoma in situ (also called intraductal carcinoma or DCIS). DCIS consist of cancer cells in the lining of the duct. DCIS is a non-invasive, early cancer, but if left untreated, it may sometimes progress to an invasive, infiltrating ductal breast cancer.
