Cut into more loadable chunks by F. Clarke-Rowland 1/5/1999 The Treasury Department report does expose inept planning and execution of the BATF raid on the Branch Davidians. However, it defends the probable cause basis for the search and arrest warrants and excuses the decision to go forward with a paramilitary raid. There is other disturbing evidence of coverup which support the argument that an Independent Counsel must be appointed to investigate the federal government's destruction of the Branch Davidian religious group. a. One hundred agents armed with automatic and semi automatic weapons invaded the compound, purportedly to execute a single search and arrest warrant. The raid went badly; four agents were killed, and by the end of the day the settlement was surrounded by armored tanks and combat helicopters. After a fifty-one day standoff, the United States Justice Department approved a plan to use CS gas against those barricaded inside. Whether by accident or plan, tanks carrying the CS gas caused the compound to explode in fire, killing all seventy-four men, women, and children inside. Could the tragedy have been prevented? Was it necesary for the BATF agents to do what they did? What could have been done differently?

Some of the groups we will look at are Scientology, Wicca, and UFO Groups. Drawing on recent research in the area of sociology of religion, the course addresses questions like why do people join cults? How do cults begin? What is their cultural and religious significance? Why do some cults end in tragedy (as dramatically shown in the cases of Jonestown, the Branch Davidians of Waco, Texas, and the

Extractions: January 28, 1994 If the anti-cult movement (ACM) involvement in the Jonestown tragedy is not as widely documented, their involvement in the Waco blunder is more evident. The questionable role of the FBI and BATF, acting under the influence and along the line of the anti-cult rhetoric, is also the subject of a film, the The Rules of Engagement . The film is being shown around the States and has received quantities of positive reviews, as well as met with a well deserved success. The following excerpts show the ACM involvement in the Waco tragedy. I let the references number in the text but they currently do not link to the reference. (more about Boyer) I think what we've seen in recent years is the emergence of a number of subgroups in different cultureseven in Japan, but certainly in American societythat apply in a kind of literal way the idea that contemporary society is evil, contemporary society is corrupt, the American government in fact is part of the vast conspiracy, and take that simply one step further and conclude that therefore we must literally, physically withdraw from society. ... What are we to make of those things that taken together could be called doomsday cults? I think doomsday cults are very significant. I see them in some ways like the canaries that used to be taken down into coal mines. If the canary died, you knew that there was a buildup of dangerous gases and you'd better be careful. It seems to me that doomsday cults tell us something about a contemporary cultural climate of anxiety, of apprehension, of uneasiness about trends in our contemporary world. And some groups, usually under the influence of a very charismatic and potent sort of leader , withdraw from the larger society and act on their belief system in a quite literal and sometimes catastrophic fashion.

Extractions: Home Page Online Magazine Forum Book reviews ... Response form Since the Waco siege , interest in religious cults has revived both in Britain and America. This article explores the growth and appeal of cults in America and raises questions about the appropriateness of public perceptions. Religious cults in twentieth century America by Dr Anne Eyre Westminster College While it may seem pedantic to spend time arguing about how to define something that seems straightforward, this is not just an academic exercise. It is important to be clear about exactly which groups come under the definition of NRM and which do not, especially if governments consider introducing legislation to curb their activities. We also need to be clear about exactly what activities are considered to be acceptable and unacceptable in society and to be sure that there is sufficient evidence to justify curtailing what some may seem as their religious freedom guaranteed under the constitution. Why do people join such groups? In a modern largely secular society such as America, many find it hard to understand the appeal of religious groups, especially those appearing to adopt strict codes of behaviour and anti-social values. Two types of explanation have been forwarded to explain the rapid growth of NRMs in the 1960s and 1970s.

Extractions: Branch Davidian Conflagration (1993) It was on this date, April 19, 1993, that federal government forces with tanks, gas and guns invaded the Mount Carmel compound, a group home in Waco, Texas, where over 80 members of the Branch Davidian cult had sequestered themselves during a 51-day siege. Mount Carmel burnt to the ground and 76 Davidians, twenty of them children, died. Their leader, 33-year-old David Koresh, also perished. David Koresh All this, however, was beyond the federal agents waiting outside the Branch Davidian compound in Waco. Smarting from the hit they took on the first day of the siege, and impatient for action, the feds broke negotiations with the Davidians, refusing to listen to any more "Bible babble" from Koresh. It is not at all clear that the Davidians desired to die in an , or that they set the flames that immolated their own home. It is possible that the tank assault itself started the fire that killed Koresh and his followers. Whatever caused the conflagration on that Spring day in 1993, it is just possible that the incident which has become known by the single word, Waco, was a massive breach of civil rights and an abuse of government power against a relatively harmless Christian sect. If it can happen to Christians, in this nation of churchgoers, are atheists safe?

June 1995, from Carol Moore "The Committee for Waco Justice is working for an complete and thorough investigation of BATF and FBI crimes against the Branch Davidian religious group near Waco Texas and for prosecution of responsible agents and officials. He is an expert on the subject of extreme religious cults and other radical groups. Program director Dan Born, associate professor of English, says "the presentation should be all the more lively since critics- both liberal and conservative- in the aftermath of the Branch Davidian siege and tragedy argue the FBI acted with undue haste and zeal in its effort to put down Koresh's movement." Ross has almost 15 years of experience studying these groups, and has served as a consultant to the FBI and ATF. He has testified in court as an expert witness, and been interviewed by news organizations including Newsweek and ABC Evening News.
