Extractions: Audley Harrison ignored a serious hand injury to defeat Kazakhstan's Mukhtarkhan Dildabekov and take Britain's first Olympic boxing gold since 1968. Harrison took charge of the contest in the opening round and increased his advantage in every subesquent round, winning by a 30-16 point decision. But despite the convincing nature of his performance, it was revealed shortly before the bout that the 28-year-old Englishman was suffering from an injured knuckle in his left hand. But he was able to dominate the battle using his right jab and through a debilitating body attack which took its effect on the Kazakhstan fighter during the final round. Harrison started slowly and actually found himself two points down after the first minute of the contest.

Extractions: In the spring of '76, Emanuel received a call from a good friend of his, Dave Jacobs, the trainer of a very talented amateur boxer named Ray Leonard whom Emanuel liked to call "Super Bad". Dave explained to Emanuel that due to injury and political problems, Ray had failed to qualify for the Olympic Trials and he was presently under some kind of suspension. Leonard's last chance for qualifying for the U.S. Olympic Trials would be to compete in the Eastern Regional Tournament, which had no location yet and would soon be going up for bids. Emanuel along with Leon Atchison and Lonnie Bates of the Detroit Recreation Program, and other civic and business leaders, raised enough money to win the bid, bringing the event to Detroit. They hosted the Eastern Regional Trials in Detroit even though the city had no serious competitors. Ray Leonard became Detroit's adopted boxer. He worked out at the Kronk Center and made many friends in Detroit during the tournament, which he won.
