The science of botany is the study of plants including plant structure, function, systematics and ecology. Students study a wide variety of activities such as the relationship of plants to each other and their environment, plant growth and metabolism, classification and identification of plants, plant cell composition and plant heredity. The undergraduate program in botany at North Dakota State University is designed for students seeking a better understanding of plants and eventual careers in the plant sciences.     Extractions: Waverley, Randwick and Botany Home Library Service: a profile 2002 See Home Library Service Brochure The Home Library Service is a free joint service for the users of the Botany, Randwick and Waverley Council areas that started initially for Waverley residents in 1969. An agreement was reached with Randwick in 1973 and then in 1977 Botany joined with Randwick to become a joint Library service. Even when Botany split from Randwick they decided it was more cost effective for Waverley to continue operating the service for their residents. Located at Waverley Library it primarily serves those housebound residents who are, by reason of age, sickness or incapacity unable to visit their local Library. As a general guide the period of incapacity is a minimum of three months. The service is provided to institutions, nursing homes and hostels but not public hospitals. Application for membership is made on a registration card, copies of which are obtained from one of the three participating libraries or are mailed out on request. This card needs to be signed by a doctor, community worker, health care worker or an officer of meals on wheels. The diversional therapist usually registers people in nursing homes simply by phoning or writing a note to the library staff. On receipt of the application by the library a telephone interview is conducted by a Home Library service staff member to determine the number and type of materials required.     Extractions: Environmental and Conservation Programs (ECP) was established in 1994 to direct The Field Museum's collections, scientific research, and educational resources to the immediate needs of conservation at local, national, and international levels. ECP is the branch of the Museum fully dedicated to translating science into action that creates and supports lasting conservation. Through partnerships with research institutions, conservation organizations, local communities, and government agencies, ECP catalyzes science-based action for conservation. On May 26, 2004 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., over 900 students (grades 3-12) from the Calumet region participated in the second annual Calumet Stewardship Day. The event engaged local students in hands-on education and restoration stations at three sites: Wolf Lake, Eggers Woods, and Powderhorn Lake. Stewardship work included releasing Galerucella beetles on the invasive purple loosestrife plant, removing garlic mustard and maintenance of tree nursery planted at last year's event. Local organizations from the Calumet region, government agency representatives and others led the hands-on education and restoration activity stations. The Field Museum hosted three education stations highlighting aquatic invertebrates, preparation of plant specimens and education programs. Thank you to all Field Museum staff and volunteers who helped out with the event!

The scope of studies covers a wide range of disciplines, many of which represent world class research. The co-operation of specialists of various branches of botany under one roof results in many multi-disciplinary research projects. The scope of the cooperation with other research centres in both Poland and abroad, is also extensive. Plants are the primary energy source for humans and virtually all other organisms within the biosphere. A greater understanding of botany is necessary as we face environmental degradation, loss of biological diversity and a need for increased food production. The flexibility of the Botany option allows students to pursue their interests in a wide variety of specializations in the field of botany. In addition to the common biology core, students take required Botany courses to provide them with a strong overall understanding of the field of Botany, with an emphasis on vascular plants. Students complete the Botany option by choosing from a wide variety of Botany, Biology and Zoology co urses, which best fit their personal interests. Additionally, students are encouraged to gain practical experience through participation in faculty directed research projects, internships and career related summer employment.
