Bridgewater College :: 2003-2004 Online Catalog Three lectures and one laboratory per week. This course is suitable for both biology majors and nonmajors. Prerequisite biology 100 or 208. http://www.bridgewater.edu/catalog/catalog2003/biology.html
Extractions: Index This department is one of Bridgewater's largest, with six full-time faculty and more than 200 majors. The Biology Department offers introductory and advanced courses that prepare majors either for immediate employment, or to enter high-level studies at graduate or professional schools. The department also serves a service function in that all Bridgewater students must take at least one biology course; most take two or three. The Biology Department offers pre-professional programs in the areas of Medicine, Dentistry, Physical Therapy and Veterinary Science. These programs prepare interested students for graduate work in selected areas. The department also offers dual degree programs in forestry (with Duke University) and Veterinary Science (with Virginia Tech). Students should contact Dr. Lawson for more details. Rapidly expanding knowledge in cell biology, molecular genetics, and ecology assures bright futures for well-prepared biologists. With a baccalaureate degree, recent graduates have become life science teachers, laboratory technicians in industry, allied health, and government, environmental and conservation professionals, health officers, case workers, naturalists, pharmaceutical salespersons, and other varied occupations. With graduate or professional degrees, Bridgewater alumni are successful physicians, research scientists, veterinarians, environmental lawyers, dentists, physical therapists, genetic counselors, forestry and wildlife specialists, and other varied professions.

Extractions: There is a strong need for education in Biocomputing, and the interdisciplinary interaction of biologists and computer scientists. In 1995/96, we have delivered award-winning 2 1/2 month courses over the Internet, designed to meet both demands. A team of biologists and computer scientists taught a mixed audience from all over the world, covering a variety of topics on a late undergraduate (senior) / graduate level. The main components of the courses were our Hypertext Coursebook, online sessions using the Electronic Conferencing system BioMOO , and the hands-on visualization of some important concepts, like sequence alignments What's new (May 9, 2000)

Extractions: ISBN: Eldon D. Enger Eldon D. Enger is a professor emeritus of biology at Delta College, a community college near Saginaw, Michigan. He received his B.A. and M.S. degrees from the University of Michigan. Professor Enger has over 30 years of teaching experience, during which he taught biology, zoology, environmental science, and several other courses, and he was very active in curriculum and course development. He was instrumental in the development of a learning community course in stream ecology, which involved students in two weekend activities including canoeing and camping, and a plant identification course that incorporated weekend field activities with backpacking and camping. In addition, he was involved in the development of an environmental regulations course and an environmental technician curriculum. Professor Enger is an advocate for variety in teaching methodology. He feels that if students are provided with varied experiences, they are more likely to learn. In addition to the standard textbook assignments, lectures, and laboratory activities, his classes were likely to include writing assignments, student presentation of lecture material, debates by students on controversial issues, field experiences, individual student projects, and discussions of local examples and relevant current events. Textbooks are very valuable for presenting content, especially if they contain accurate, informative drawings and visual examples. Lectures are best used to help students see themes and make connections, and laboratory activities provide important hands-on activities.
