Many beginning and returning students are confronting for the first time, the challenge of having to learn a great deal of technical material at a rapid pace. In response, biology instructor Diana DeFelice and English/Reading instructor Jan Swinton have paired Biology 101 with a Study Skills class in two modes. Though the makeup and format of the two differ somewhat, the goals have been the same: to help students learn biology and pass the course with a C or better; to help students learn study strategies that they could use immediately in the biology course as well as in other classes; and to help students develop more personal responsibility for their learning. "I was taking a teach a person to fish approach in this project," says Jan Swinton. "If we could teach the students HOW to learn biology, and not just the biology, they could take this approach to other classes. I wanted the students to recognize that learning is their responsibility, no matter how tough the textbook and no matter how complex and fast-moving the lectures are."

Results of these studies will benefit ranchers as well as State and Federal land managers. Information collected under a BRD science initiative focusing on the Central Plains will help resource managers in South Dakota identify land management practices to protect the remaining grasslands in the State while accommodating economic activity. The initiative fosters partnerships among scientists, farmers, and State and local planners to help maintain populations of the unique plants and animals found in native grasslands. The Conservation Reserve Program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture has taken millions of acres of marginal farmland out of production to enhance their value as food and cover for wildlife. The BRD has been cooperating in a number of integrated studies to identify the benefits of this program to ducks, pheasants, hawks, and songbirds. Results are of interest to hunters, farmers, and conservation groups. BRD scientists are conducting studies in the prairie pothole region of the State on the effects of coyote and red fox predation on duck nesting success. We use simulations, role-plays, case-studies, and exercises to explore the individual, group, and organizational dynamics in which we all play a role. Students do a "cultural immersion" paper for which they are asked to visit a place in which they are in the minority and write about their experience. They also interview two managers (one the same race and gender as the student and the other a different race and/or gender) about their personal experiences with diversity and their companies' strategies for creating more inclusive and productive work environments. Mathematics Teresa Healy, Elaine Klett, Barbara Tozzi, Linda Wang Many courses in our mathematics department have strong problem-solving components where students use mathematical skills and concepts while working with real-world data. This provides an opportunity for introducing issues of diversity. For example, students in our statistics course compare and contrast data on diverse population groups. These students might also perform Chi Square Tests of Independence on data relating types of professional jobs held at colleges to ethnic groups. Students in basic math courses analyze charts and graphs relating race and age to health and other social issues.

By developing lessons about cocaine, amphetamines, drug testing and nerve gas, a pharmacology professor and a chemistry teacher have discovered that they can grab the attention of high school students to more effectively teach them biology and chemistry. In fact, they found in a nationwide test of their more relevant approach, students taught using the lessons scored far higher gains in their understanding of biology and chemistry than is common in even the most successful curriculum experiments. The developers of the new curriculum called the Pharmacology Education Partnership (PEP) are Rochelle Schwartz-Bloom, a professor of pharmacology and cancer biology at Duke University Medical Center, and Myra Halpin, a chemistry teacher at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. They published the results of a comparative analysis of their approach with the usual teaching methods in an article in the November 2003 Journal of Research in Science Teaching. Development of the PEP curriculum was supported by the science education program at the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
