Extractions: Initial Contacts with the British The Persian Gulf was notorious to the Royal Navy as a hotbed of piracy. This was particularly pressing to the British due to the importance of maintaining communications between London and India. The Imperial East India Company made repeated efforts at cleaning all piracy out of the Gulf region. The role of Bahrain as being a natural harbour meant that it was an obvious target of Royal Naval pressure. Establishment of Formal Relations Administration Sheikh Isa was to live to 1932. In that time, the British were content to let the Sheikh run the island pretty much as he pleased. However, as time passed Sheikh Isa was beginning to prove to be a bit too conservative even by British standards and so in 1921 he was forced to relinquish day to day control over Bahrain to his son, Hamad. Almost immediatly, Bahrain embarked upon a policy of modernisation. This was further aided by the political appointment of Charles Belgrave as adviser to the Emir. Together, these two established much of Bahrain's infrastructure with roads, schools and hospitals. There job was made easier with the discovery and exploitation of oil. Role within the Empire Bahrain's primary purpose was that of a Naval base until the discovery of oil. Indeed, the Royal Navy moved its whole Middle Eastern command from Bushire to Bahrain in 1935. Oil was first reported by a British official in 1902 when he heard reports of oil spouting out near the coastline. However, it wasn't until 1925 that the first oil concession was awarded to the New Zealander, Frank Holmes, and even then it took until 1932 to find enough commercial quantities to extract. By 1936 Bahrain was exporting oil. During the second world war this supply of oil took an added dimension and level of importance as one of only three sources of oil in the Middle East at the time. Indeed the Italians even tried a less than successful bombing raid on to the refineries in 1940.

Extractions: Initial Contacts with the British The Mamluk rulers of Iraq did not have much love for their Ottoman overlords and so tried to cultivate increased economic and political links with the British. In 1798, they allowed a British agent to be appointed to the court in Baghdad and this was closely followed by the opening of a British Consulate there in 1802. This helped to stimulate British trade and commercial activity in the area, particularly with regards to textiles, but also with the new technologies of the nineteenth century: Steamships and the telegraph were just two of the state of the art technologies provided by the British. The Mamluks were overthrown in 1831 and direct control from Constantinople was reestablished, but commercial and economic links to the British and Europoean powers had become so well established that they were maintained by most of the subsequent governors of the province. European influences were also felt at a deeper level as reforms were instituted by various rulers of Iraq. Land, administrative and legal reforms all helped the economy to develop along more Western lines as they turned the older tribal leaders and sheikhs into land holders and profit seekers. The flip side to this development was the way in which traditional craftsman were left exposed to the mass production techniques of British and European companies. For most of the nineteenth century Britain was content to take commercial advantage of this part of the Ottoman Empire with no administrative costs or worries. However, by the turn of the twentieth century the Ottomans had decided to diversify their economic allegiances with the European powers and had left the British traders and companies in a dangerously precarious position. One manifestation of this policy was a series of high profile projects conducted in collaboration with the Germans. The most famous of which was the Berlin to Baghdad railway built in 1899. Stronger economic links almost inevitably led to stronger political ties as the Young Turk revolution of 1908 openly looked towards the Germans to provide a model for Ottoman political and economic development.

Extractions: In AD 653, the mighty armies of King Penda of Mercia expanded their monarch's influence to the control of Middle Anglia (Leicestershire and parts of Lincoln and Derby), where his son Peada was appointed King. Soon afterward, the young king visited his neighbour, King Oswiu of Northumbria, at Walton (or Atwell or Wattbottle) and, as his new kingdom had already been considerably influenced by East Anglian Christianity, Peada agreed to be baptised in return for the hand of Oswiu's daughter, Alchflaed. Bishop Finan of Lindisfarne therefore welcomed the King and a number of his nobles into the Christian faith and Oswiu provided him with four priests to instruct his people further. One of these was St. Cedd. Within a year, Cedd returned home, having helped to convert much of Middle Anglia to Christianity. He travelled to Lindisfarne to confer with Bishop Finan, who promptly sent this impress young missionary out once more to evangelise the people of Essex, who were sorely in need of some spiritual guidance. King Oswiu, having imposed his overlordship there, had persuaded King Sigeberht Sanctus to adopt Christianity, in a general mobilization against Penda of Mercia. Cedd thus turned south again to spread the word of God amongst the East Saxons. He baptised many of the locals and built several churches - possibly Prittlewell and West Mersea amongst them - and is particularly noted for the foundation of monasteries at Ythanchester (Bradwell-on-Sea) and Tilaburg (East Tilbury).
