He was to establish a dynasty that would determine the destiny of Russia for three centuries. A line of dynastic rulers would come in his wake: Alexeiwho would raise Russia to a position of importance in Eastern Europe; Peter the Greatwho would build an invincible army and a new capital, St. Petersburg, and forcibly bring Russia out of the Middle Ages and into the modern world; and in the eighteenth century a succession of three extraordinary empresses, Anna, Elizabeth, and Catherine the Great, who would break with the tradition of supreme male authority. Catherine would bring the ideas of the Enlightenment to Russia and create a court whose splendor would rival that of Versailles. At its height in the mid-nineteenth century, the empire of the Romanovs comprised more than one sixth of the earth's surface. It was a "whole world, self-sufficient, independent, and absolute"flaunting the greatest wealth in Europe. Its culture, both rich and brilliant, would continue to shine, decades after the demise of its imperial benefactors. This was the world that ended with the murders of the last of the Romanovs: Nicholas II and Alexandra, and their five children.

White, Spring 1999 hen he here are a few surviving accounts of the founding of the Order, from William, Archbishop of Tyre (d. 1186), Michael the Syrian, the Patriarch of Antioch (d. 1199) and Walter Map, Archdeacon of Oxford (d 1208-10). Of the three, William is probably the most accurate with Michael the Syrian a close second, while Walter Map seemed more devoted to telling a good story rather than an accurate one. illiam wrote that in 1118, a number of noble men including Hugh took vows from the Patriarch of Jerusalem. They decided that their main duty, for the remission of their sins, was to "maintain, as far as they could, the roads and highways against the ambushes of thieves and attackers, especially in regard to the safety of pilgrims." Michael the Syrian gives the number of original Templars to be thirty, not including Hugh, and relates that it was Baldwin who convinced them to become knights instead of monks. Walter Map wrote a short story about a Burgundian knight named Paganus who took it upon himself to protect the pilgrims. When the enemy's numbers became too great, Paganus secured a hall from the canons and began to recruit more knights. (Barber, 6-7)
