On this page you will find brief biographical sketches of several key figures in African American history. Although he spent nearly his entire life on one farm, Banneker had an important influence on how African Americans were viewed during the Federalist and Jeffersonian periods of American history. Born in Baltimore County, Maryland, Banneker was the child of a free black father. He had little formal education, but he became literate and read widely. At 21, he built a clock with every part made of woodit ran for 40 years. After the death of his father, he lived on his father's 100-acre farm, largely secluded from the outside world, with his sisters. Self taught in the fields of astronomy and surveying, he assisted in the survey of the Federal Territory of 1791 and calculated ephemerides and made eclipse projections for Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis

Search African History Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela Former president of South Africa and world acclaimed international statesman. Related Resources Glossary: Banned Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the small village of Mvezo, on the Mbashe River, district of Umtata in Transkei, South Africa. His Father named him Rolihlahla, which means "pulling the branch of the tree", or more colloquially "troublemaker." The name Nelson was not given until his first day at school. Nelson Mandela's father, Gadla Henry Mphakanyiswa, was the chief "by blood and custom" of Mvezo, a position confirmed by the paramount chief of the Thembu, Jongintaba Dalindyebo. Although the family is descended from Thembu royalty (one of Mandela's ancestors was paramount chief in the 18th century) the line had passed down to Mandela through lesser 'Houses', rather than through a line of potential succession. The clan name of Madiba, which is often used as a form of address for Mandela, comes from the ancestral chief.
Royalty & Peerages In Commonwealth Land Forces: Introduction And Links Royal biographies (Monarchist League of New Zealand, Inc.); The la Cour Ordersof Chivalry, royalty and Nobility; Royal and Ruling Houses of africa, Asia and http://www.regiments.org/milhist/biography/royals/intrlink.htm
Extractions: Introduction The office of Colonel of Regiment was originally and normally reserved for an aristrocrat who owned the regiment and equipped it. These regiments were almost always single-battalion units, and the Colonel had a tactical role as its head, with the Lieutenant-Colonel and Major commanding two of the three wings of the regiment. With the eclipse of pikemen in the battalion, the three wings were united under the command of the Lieutenant-Colonel, while the Colonel was relegated to a more ceremonial role, and was almost always of General rank. In 1755 the 60th Regiment (late The King's Royal Rifle Corps) was raised with multiple battalions, and this called for a "Colonel-in-Chief" as well as the ceremonial Colonels of the battalions. Having set this precedent, the multiple-battalion Rifle Brigade also had a Colonel-in-Chief from its founding in 1800. The 1881 Cardwell scheme of making all infantry multi-battalion regiments suggested the possibility of widespread appointments of Colonel-in-Chief. These were almost exclusively reserved for members of royal family, who had already been occasionally appointed as Colonels of regular regiments, and Honorary Colonels of Militia and Volunteers. This was a firmer institutionalisation of an ancient tradition of bestowing royal favours on regiments. After 1869 no more non-royals were appointed to the office of Colonel-in-Chief in

This part of my web page is dedicated to one of the greatest queens, and women, of our time. Her Majesty exemplifies poise, style, and grace under fire. Always keeping a brave face through the trials and tribulations of her reign, Elizabeth was always graceful and courteous throughout all she went through. Please enjoy this page. Elizabeth II, the Queen of England, is the greatest woman who ever reigned. It all began on her Coronation Day June 2, 1953; she inspired mankind as she rode through in her golden coach drawn by grand white horses. She waved to all whom she passed by, smiling bravely as she headed toward her destiny. Her husband, Prince Philip, rode beside her. Dressed in his naval uniform, he wore layers of shining gold epaulets, waving and occasionally saluting the crowds with a white-gloved hand. Once they arrived at Westminster Abbey, they were heralded by trumpets, and throngs of people cheered. Elizabeth, taking over after her father died of lung cancer, was the first reigning queen since Victoria. The ceremony was broadcast on the radio around the world. At Elizabeth's request, it was also broadcast live on the television, the newest media device at the time. With the coronation televised, it brought home the splendor and the significance never before seen to hundreds of thousands of people.

Moore made her debut in London, aged 17, at the Savoy Theatre on the 7th December 1889, playing 'Casilda' in the Gilbert and Sullivan opera The Gondoliers. It was a hit and more work followed. Two of her roles mentioned by George Bernard Shaw in his book, 'Our Theatres in the Nineties', were in The White Silk Dress and Lost, Stolen and Strayed. On the 18th September 1894 in Richmond, New York, whilst touring in the show 'The Gaiety Girl', Moore married a fellow cast member, Cecil Ainslie Walker-Leigh. Later, in 1896, to please her mother, she had a church wedding in London. Cecil was a career officer in the British Army, born at Ballyseedy Castle, Tralee, Ireland and who served in the Boer and Great War, retiring with the rank of Colonel. A son was born in 1898, William Esmond Ormond Walker-Leigh, but Moore subsequently divorced her husband, the divorce being finalised in 1902.
