The women's field is wide-open with Sweden's Magdalena Forsberg retired and Norway's Liv Grete Poiree out with a newborn baby. The men's favorite has to be Norway's Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, who won four golds in Salt Lake City.

Extractions: Some historians believe biathlon originated in Norway about 4,000 years ago, as documented by rock carvings of two men stalking animals on skis. From the 1700s on, biathlon played a military role; armed skiers protected the Scandinavian nations. The first biathlon competition took place in 1767 between "ski-runner companies" which guarded the Swedish-Norwegian borders. In 1919, Finish statistics show about 2,000 men participating in biathlon each winter. And in the late 1930s, the Finnish army on skis, carrying rifles, out numbered the Russians 10 to one and defended Finland's border. The first widely recognized international competition in biathlon was staged during the Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France in 1924. During those games, the military patrol was introduced as a demonstration event and was continued in the 1928, 1936, and 1948 Olympics. It wasn't until 1955 that biathlon was accepted as an official Olympic sport, and only six nations participated.

Millions of Europeans will tune in to Maines Saint John Valley March 3-6, as it hosts the first Biathlon World Cup ever held in New England. Fort Kent joins the upper echelon of only three other United States World Cup host cities, among them Olympic Games hosts Lake Placid, New York, and Salt Lake City, Utah. Event Manager and Chief of Competition, Max Cobb, says, Its a real tribute to the Maine Winter Sports Center and Fort Kents extraordinary volunteers that this event is coming. Extractions: Winter Olympic Sports Biathlon About The Biathlon is the joining together of two sports, cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Biathlon skiers ski with rifles for a certain distance and then shoot the rifles at designated targets. After the race, the time taken to complete the race and the points deducted from shooting, which have been converted into time, are added and the one with the least total points is the winner. The biathlon includes individual and relay races. Skiing is a demanding sport that requires strong legs that can produce a great driving force. Rifle shooting is a stationary sport in which competitors shoot at targets without moving. The biathlon is the combination of a stationary and a dynamic sport. After racing, the skier may have to take the time to catch his or her breath before shooting, and so waste valuable time.

Extractions: Ole Einar Bjoerndalen dug deep to win the men's 20-kilometre biathlon gold medal at the Winter Olympics. The Norwegian, who took part in a cross-country competition just two days earlier, held off the challenge of Germany's Frank Luck who took silver at Soldier Hollow. Victor Maigourov of Russia finished in the bronze medal position. Late call-up Jason Sklenar led Britain's standings with a finish of 48th out of 87 competitors. Mike Dixon and Mark Gee struggled into 79th and 81st places respectively. Bjoerndalen put skiing power ahead of marksmanship to triumph. The 28-year-old won the individual 10km sprint four years ago at Nagano. This time, he missed two of his 20 targets to earn a two-minute penalty, yet still came home ahead of Luck in 51 minutes 03.3 seconds. The winner had to recover from the 30km cross-country on Saturday, when he finished sixth.
