The US Olympic Biathlon trials are coming up at Ripley at the end of this month; with the snow cover thin - and getting thinner - organizers are scrambling to avoid an Olympic meltdown. ANNALESE BAUMMER, from Minnetonka, and Nick Koshnik, Detroit Lakes, have been training at Ripley in advance of the trials. Though most exposed hillsides are bare as November, they say the trails, which run through the woods, can still be skied.

Extractions: Biathlon is the exciting sport that combines the physical demands of fast-paced cross-country skiing with the precision and control of rifle marksmanship. Overall, biathlon is becoming one of the fastest growing spectator sports in Europe. In the event, the biathlete is required to race several kilometers on challenging terrain with a .22 caliber rifle harnessed to their back, and then shoot either standing or prone (lying on the stomach) at targets 50 meters away. Skiing and shooting are alternated, requiring the athlete to push their body to their limits during skiing, and then quickly calm their body and heartbeat enough to be able to hit the targets. The Minnesota Biathlon Community Olympic Development Program combines local weekly training with intensive instruction during camps at a variety of training locations in Minnesota and Olympic Training Centers throughout the nation. Along with local training, biathletes participate in camps. Nearly 70 CODP biathletes train throughout the state. The Minnesota Biathlon Community Olympic Development Program is the largest and most successful junior biathlon program in the nation.

Extractions: Biathlon, derived form the Greek word meaning 'two test', combines cross country skiing and rifle shooting. Its roots go back over 4,000 years when Norwegian hunters with spears and arrows chased their prey on skis. In the mid-16th century, troops on skis played major roles in Scandinavian wars and battles, helping give the sport a strong military connection, which it kept unil after WWII. The sport was dropped from the Olympic schedule after WWII because of strong anti-military sentiment, but was included again in 1960. Events are contested by individuals or by relay teams of four women or four men. The shooting sessions consist of five shots fired at a 45mm (prone position) or 115mm (standing positoin) metal target 50m away. The shooting sessions alternate between standing and prone positions. The skiers' final standing s are determined by their overall elapsed tiem, so it is important to shoot as quickly as possible while maintaining accuracy.

Extractions: Biathlon gots its Olympic start in 1936 Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch Partenkirchen, Germany. At that time, the Olympic event of Biathlon consisted of one race modeled after a military patrol. After World War II, Biathlon was absent from the Olympic agenda until the 20 kilometer individual event was added to the 1960 Winter Games in Squaw Valley. It has been a part of the Olympic program ever since, but not without changes. Along with rule change has come technology, faster skis, target systems that show hits and misses instantly, and computer technology that instantly relays feedback from the target to the timing systems and to television production. All of this combined has allowed spectators to follow biathlon competitions with greater ease, understanding, and enthusiasm. The target system used for the 2004 Biathlon World Cup in Fort Kent is state-of-the-art. Targets measure hits and misses by using a laser to detect the weight of the lead entering the black bullseye of the target. If the wieght measured by the laser equals over half the weight of a .22-caliber bullet, the target registers a hit, and the black target turns white.
