The women will race on the opening morning of the Games, followed by the men the next morning. Although the sport is technically just 27 years old - competitions dating back to California in 1973 before the Hawaiian Ironman challenge, which is regarded as the sport's true origin in 1978 - its individual components are, of course, ancient: swimming, cycling, running. Collins enjoyed himself so much that he decided it would be a good idea to combine Hawaii's Waikiki Roughwater Swim, Around-Oahu Bike Race and Honolulu Marathon as one event; that meant an exhausting schedule involving a 3.85 kilometres open water swim, a 179 kilometres cycle and a 42 kilometres run. The Ironman challenge was born.
Soldier Hollow history / Legacy Mountain Dell had originally been proposed as the olympic crosscountryskiing and biathlon site, but Soldier Hollow emerged as the http://www.soldierhollow.com/aboutus/history.html
Extractions: History / Legacy One of the most frequently asked questions is the origin of the name. It is very likely that Soldier Hollow was named for a company of soldiers under the command of Captain James H. Simpson. In 1859, Simpson was ordered to conduct a survey in search of a shorter route between Camp Floyd, Utah and Fort Bridger, Wyoming. A stopover in this area of the Wasatch Mountains provided the historical reference. Soldier Hollow in Wasatch Mountain State Park was selected as the 10th and final Olympic competition venue in October 1997. Mountain Dell had originally been proposed as the Olympic cross-country skiing and biathlon site, but Soldier Hollow emerged as the best replacement when a venue change was necessary to protect a watershed area. With its selection as an Olympic venue, the transformation of Soldier Hollow began into a world-class location for competitors and spectators. The basic footprint of the area was completed in 1999. Soldier Hollow hosted World Cup events in 2001 in biathlon, cross-country skiing and nordic combined as pre-Olympic test events. The venue has also been the site of national championships in biathlon and cross country. In February and March 2002, Soldier Hollow hosted 23 events during the Olympic Winter Games and 15 events during the Paralympic Winter Games. Soldier Hollow is unprecedented among world-class venues in that the terrain is open and less wooded ideal for spectators with about two-thirds of the course visible at all times. The course is also designed to maximize the number of times the competitors ski through the stadium.

Extractions: and the Winter Games Go directly to the Mission Spirit of 2010 Olympic Forum Portal The 2010 Olympic winter sports competitions are to be held in Supernatural B.C.. For recreation and sports there is no better place than British Columbia. With our towering mountains carved by glacier fed rivers we have it all for world class winter sports. Olympic sports winter competitions include: Biathlon, Bobsleigh, Curling, Ice Hockey, Luge, Skating, Skeleton, Skiing, Snowboarding. The word biathlon stems from the Greek word for two contests. In this case cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship which makes it one of the most practical winter sports. Rock paintings found in Norway depict bow hunters on wood skis and date back to about 3000 B.C. It was formally introduced as an Olympic sports winter event in 1960 though it had made many demonstration appearances since the first Winter Sports Olympics in France. See the history of the Olympics There are three events in Olympic Bobsledding: two-man, four-man and two-woman. Sleds that look similar to the modern day bobsled have been raced for more than 200 years. Some historians say the sport started in Switzerland in the late 1800s when someone put runners on a tobbagan to get more spead. Early racerswould bob back and forth in an effort to get more speed. It failed to increase the speed but the name stuck. Probably the most famous bobsled team of all was the 1988 Jamaican bobsled team. On January 5, 1898 the organized competition was held with five-passenger sleds. Two of the passengers had to be women. The winter sport became an Olympic sport when it was included in the first Winter Olympics at Chamonix, France, in 1924.

If they do, they must either add one minute to their time in individual events or do a 150-meter penalty lap on a loop of the trail in the relay events. Biathletes must not forget to pat teammates on the back to signify a change-over. That's the official shift-change move, not merely a gesture of goodwill. Biathletes must not forget to study their ski wax; the wrong wax for snow conditions can cost a race. Teams have special wax experts on staff. Biathletes must not take longer than about 15 seconds to hit all five targets if they want to be among their sport's elite. Biathletes must not use any rifle not in the proper weight range of between 7.7 and 9.9 pounds. The standard biathlon equipment is a .22 caliber, bolt-action rifle.
