Americans Embrace Teams, Heroes On TV, Can't Find Lonely Biathlon Americans embrace teams, heroes on TV, can't find lonely biathlon. BY PEGGY WALSHSARNECKI. Free Press Staff Writer. Extractions: Free Press Staff Writer Americans love to watch Olympic hockey but aren't exactly channel surfing to find the biathalon. Why? Americans love team sports and media exposure, said Lewis Carlson, head of the American Studies department at Western Michigan and an expert on the Olympics as pop culture. Biathalon is a combination of cross-country skiing and target shooting. Hockey you already know about. See? Carlson, who published "Tales of Gold" on the Summer Olympics in 1987, gained international attention this week when reporters in Nagano asked him to explain the snowboarding culture, following the marijuana flap involving Canadian gold medalist Ross Rebagliati. Americans feel a stake in team victories, he said baseball, football, hockey, college teams. "I think it's been a gradual evolution.... They represent a town, they represent a state and they represent the nation," he said. The buy-in isn't the same with the individual sports, Carlson said, unless the American is a contender Dan Jansen and Bonnie Blair in speedskating, Michelle Kwan and Tara Lipinski in figure skating. The media also play a very big role, Carlson said. More media exposure increases familiarity and understanding for a sport. Sports which are easier to put on television or easier to photograph for newspapers get more coverage.

Extractions: Current News U.S. Women Miss Mark in Individual Competition at World Biathlon Championships Oberhof, Germany, February 10 - All four American women had trouble on the shooing range Tuesday, with no one recording less than seven penalties in the Women's 15K Individual Competition at the Biathlon World Championships. Those small things are all the U.S. women took away from today's competition. Over the past two days, snow has covered the Oberhof venue and the temperatures are below freezing. The skiing is now vastly improved from the weekend slush. But the wind that has plagued every competition remained. Even though the huge gusts were gone, the wind was a factor for every woman. There was no clean shooting in the field of over 80. The U.S. women were once again led by Steer (Anchorage, AK). Steer, who placed 20th in the sprint on Saturday, finished 62nd today, with seven penalties. Her first two stages, with only one penalty in prone, found her in 22nd position. Then in the second standing stage, she uncharacteristically missed four shots, adding four minutes to her time. The final prone added two more and she fell out of contention. Steer finished 9:35.2 behind gold medalist Olga Pyleva of Russia, with one penalty, who toured the course in 48:46.8. Another Russian, Albina Akhatova was second, 44 seconds back and Ukrainian Olena Petrova, with three penalties, was third, 1:46.9 back.

Extractions: Cross-Country Skiing ... Sports Schedule The biathlon combines opposites: on the one hand athletes have to summon up all their strength on the cross-country run to make good time, on the other hand it is vital to concentrate and remain calm when trying to hit all of the five targets at the firing range. For each target missed, athletes take a lap around the 150m penalty loop or - as in the individual event - one minute is added to their total time. In the sprint two firing ranges are passed. Ranking in this event provides the starting order for another event: the pursuit with four stops (as in all other events except for sprint and relay), which is won by the first athlete to cross the finish- line. The relays and the mass start are easy for spectators to follow, whereas crossing the finish line and ranking cannot be equated in the individual race. Ten events are on the agenda of the Winter Universiade Innsbruck/Seefeld 2005: Women's Men's 7.5 km Sprint Event 10 km Pursuit 15 km Individual 3x6 km Relay 12.5 km Mass Start

Cross country skis and a .22 caliber rifle are standard equipment for this sport. The goal is to finish the skiing course as quickly as possible, while briefly stopping at regular intervals to shoot at targets that are 50 meters away. Depending on the event, missed targets result in penalty minutes added to a finisher's final time, or in a competitor having to ski a penalty lap. There are three events for men and three for women: the individual competition, the sprint and the team relay. In the individual competition, racers ski five laps and shoot five shots after the end of the first four laps. Skiers take the shots after the first and third laps resting on his or her stomachcalled the prone position. After after the second and fourth laps, shots are taken while standing. Missed shots result in one minute added to the competitor's time. For men, the course is 20 kilometers; for women, it is 15 kilometers. The winner is the individual with the fastest time.
