Belarus: History Encyclopediabelarus history. Early History through the Soviet Era.The region now constituting Belarus was colonized by East Slavic http://www.factmonster.com/ce6/world/A0856895.html
Extractions: Encyclopedia Belarus The region now constituting Belarus was colonized by East Slavic tribes from the 5th to the 8th cent. It fell (9th cent.) under the sway of Kievan Rus and was later (12th cent.) subdivided into several Belarussian principalities forming part of the Kievan state. Kiev's destruction by the Mongols in the 13th cent. facilitated the conquest (early 14th cent.) of Belarus by the dukes of Lithuania. The region became part of the grand duchy of Lithuania, which in 1569 was merged with Poland. The large Jewish population (later decimated by the Germans during World War II) settled in Belarus in the 14th cent. The region flourished under Lithuanian rule; but after the Polish-Lithuanian union Belarus lost its relative importance, and its ruling classes became thoroughly Polonized. In Mar., 1918, the Belarussian National Rada in Minsk proclaimed the region an independent republic; but in Jan., 1919, the Soviet government proclaimed a Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic at Smolensk, and soon the Red Army occupied all of Belarus. In 1921, the Treaty of Riga, which ended the Soviet-Polish War, awarded W Belarus to Poland. The eastern and larger part formed the Belorussian SSR when the USSR was formally established in 1922. In Sept., 1939, the Soviet army overran W Belarus and incorporated it into the Belorussian SSR. Occupied by the Germans during World War II, Belorussia was one of the most devastated areas of the USSR. In 1945 its western border was adjusted slightly in favor of Poland, but the 1939 frontier remained essentially unchanged. The republic has had a separate seat in the United Nations since 1945.

The town went by the names Kapatkevichi, Kapatkovichi, and Kapytkavichi, among others. The most ancient form of the name is Kapytkovichi, meaning children of Kapytok or Kaptka. the top ^ Lithuania and the Russian Empire In 1568, Kopatkevichi lay within the borders of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1569, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland joined to form the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In 1768, Kopatkevichi came into the possession of landowner Rafail Yalenski. After the 1793 division of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by Austria, Prussia, and Russia, the Minsk district, and with it Kopatkevichi, became part of the Russian Empire. Kopatkevichi lay within the Russian Empire's "Pale of Settlement," within which Jews were permitted to live. Under Russian Empire administrative divisions, Kopatkevichi was in the Mozyr volost (district), of the Minsk gubernia (province).

History Of Belarus The first written document of the Belarusan statehood goes far back as 980 AD when Prince Rogvold began his reign on Polotsk lands which are the historic and religious center of the Belarusan nation http://www.belarusguide.com/as/archiv/web_pages/novik/history.htm
Extractions: The first written document of the Belarusan statehood goes far back as 980 AD when Prince Rogvold began his reign on Polotsk lands which are the historic and religious center of the Belarusan nation and culture. The formation of the features of Belarusan people began in special socioeconomic and political conditions of the Polotsk Principality. The young, fast growing state made close trade ties with German (Hansa) cities, with Scandinavia, neighboring eastern and southern principalities. On the Polotsk territory under the influence of local cultural views the traditions of Byzantine architecture were revaluated and as a result the outstanding Polotsk architecture school emerged in the 12th century. It greatly influenced the architecture of Smolensk and Vladimir-Suzdal principalities and later of the Moscow state. From the 13th till the 16th century the territory of contemporary Belarus was the center of a medieval polyethnic state-Grand Duchy of Litva. The Grand Duchy of Litva which is sometimes called by historians Belarusan-Lithuanian state was one of the largest, most powerful and flourishing states in medieval Eastern Europe. The lands of contemporary Belarus, Lithuania, Ukraine and a part of Russia comprised this state. The large role of ethnic Belarusans in this state is proved by the fact that the state language in the Grand Duchy of Litva was Belarusan. Grand Duchy of Litva-Belarusan-Lithuanian State in 13-16 centuries In 1569 the Grand Duchy of Litva and the Polish Kingdom established a political union according to which the Litva-Poland confederation- Rzecz Pospolita-emerged. As a result of three divisions of Rzecz Pospolita in 1772, 1793 and 1795 between three empires - Russia, Austria and Prussia - the Belarusan lands were incorporated into the Russian Empire. So the third division of Rzecz Pospolita in 1795 practically checked the development of Belarusan statehood for more than 100 years.
