Extractions: Animal Description: The Bearded Dragon is a type of agamid lizard native to Australia. They are often mistaken for Horned Toads. The Bearded Dragon is quite docile and does not require much handling to become a docile pet. The most common subspecies of the Bearded Dragon is P.vitticeps, also known as the Yellow-Headed Bearded Dragon. Bearded Dragons are fairly large lizards that grow to about 20 inches (50cm), and have a very wide body. Like many other agamids, they have a triangular, blunt head. The scales on the throat and head are pointed, as are the scales on the sides of the body. When threatened, the Dragon opens its mouth and flares out its throat.

Extractions: Last updated January 15, 2003 Dragons Down Under: The Inland Bearded Dragon "Oh! A horned toad! I haven't seen one of those in years!" is a comment I often hear when event-goers see my bearded dragon. To me, the resemblance is superficial: the flattened body liberally supplied with sharp-looking spikes of various sizes. The head shape is very different, however, with the bearded dragon's being bluntly triangular as opposed to the slightly rounded head shape of the horned toad (whose proper name is horned lizard, Phrynosoma sp.) which is also furnished with longer spikes protruding from the back of the skull. The horned lizards are native to the American Southwest while the bearded dragons are native to Australia and New Guinea. Australia is home to a number of dragons, a name given to many of their agamid lizards which include the popular bearded dragons and water dragons. Australia has very restrictive export laws relating to its wildlife; thus, the bearded dragons found in the U.S. pet trade are descendants from founder animals imported from Europe. Bearded dragons are gaining popularity as pets. Wonderfully tempered, intriguing in appearance, quizzical in countenance, these lizards do not get very large (especially in relation to the green iguana), and require little in the nature of active training or taming to make them calm and handleable. As with all reptiles, there are important things to know before buying a bearded, and to keep them healthy and long-lived.

Although the bugs in their diet may seem, well, unpleasant, after the owner of a Bearded Dragon has gotten used to it, the large lizard will become a friend that will last for years.

There are three types of bearded dragons commonly kept by enthusiasts in Australia; the Eastern Bearded Dragon ( Pogona Barbata), the Pygmy Bearded Dragon ( P. henrylawsoni) and the Central Bearded Dragon ( Pogona vitticeps ) - also known as the 'Centralian' (see pics above). The Eastern Bearded Dragon occurs along the length of the Great Dividing Range and is replaced in more arid areas by the Central Bearded Dragon. Pygmy Bearded Dragons are native to the black soil plains of Central Queensland. Bearded dragons are terrestrial, sun-loving species and it is not uncommon to see them basking on the road side, on fence posts or logs. Of all the reptiles commonly kept, bearded dragons are amongst the most popular, due to their availability and relative ease of care. Bearded dragons are named for the distinctive flap of skin which lies below their jaw. When threatened, these lizards assume a defensive posture, opening their mouths and pushing their throat skin forward to make this 'beard'. This, combined with the strong spikes which line the lizard's throat and the side of its body serve as a deterrent to would-be predators.

Examples include water dragons, frilled dragons and small monitors. F eed insects that are as long as the width of your lizard's head. Offer food to hatchlings little and often, as much as they want, up to three times per day. If insufficiently fed, those in groups tendency to bite each have a other's toes and tails. Uneaten crickets distress and irritate lizards and need to be removed after a reasonable period. Crickets also eat lizard faeces, which can lead to re-infection with internal parasites. It is best practice to feed only what will be eaten quickly and then to remove any surplus. Added extras Hatchlings can be frightened of fast moving prey like crickets, putting the crickets in a fridge for a few minutes slows them down All insect food should be both gut loaded with high quality insect food, and dusted with a highly adherent calcium powder especially for hatchlings. To enable calcium intake to be absorbed each individual must receive a regular weekly supplement of easily reptile-assimilated vitamin D3 ,or very close access to a specialist reptile ultraviolet fluorescent lamp, claiming an output of 5% UVB light. Bearded dragons also take vegetable matter. Spray this with tepid water to keep it fresh longer and provide additional moisture intake. Offer grapes, green beans, dandelion leaves and flowers, clover, Romaine lettuce, mustard greens, peas and sweet corn.

Extractions: Inland Bearded Dragon ( Pogona vitticeps Care in Captivity by Chris Jorden Introduction Bearded dragons are extremely popular at the moment, and are becoming even more increasingly so all the time. They have wonderful temperaments, and some even seem to enjoy being handled, the breed fairly easily and they display interesting social behaviour like courtship, threat and recognition. Bearded dragons grow to between 40 and 60 cm (16 - 24 inches) in length, although the males are usually bigger than females. Bearded dragons are a greyish brown in colour, although many colour types can be encountered, the prettier of these include lime phase, gold phase and sandfire red phase. Although these Australian lizards can be a great choice for beginners, their need for ultra-violet light, regular feeding and cleaning, and a very large vivarium can make them harder to keep than other smaller species such as leopard geckos and green anoles. Selecting A Bearded Dragon Before your decide to purchase one of these comical lizards, you must do a lot of research using books, web pages and by talking to experienced herpotologists or herpoculturists, and you must be sure you have the time and space for one of these quite demanding animals.
