Extractions: FRASCHILLA NAMED NEW COACH: Athletic director Rudy Davalos announced on March 27 that Fran Fraschilla would be the Lobos' new coach. Fraschilla, who was the coach at St. John's from 196-98 and at Manhattan from 1993-96, replaces Dave Bliss, who left for Baylor after 11 seasons on the Lobo bench. Fraschilla has a career coaching record of 120-59 (.670) and becomes the 17th man to lead the UNM basketball program. FRAN'S THE MAN: While at St. John's, Fraschilla took the Red Storm to the NCAA Tournament in 1998 (a first-round loss to Detroit) and had a 21-15 record in Big East play - 12-6 on the road. Some of his highlights at St. John's include ending a 46-game home court winning streak by Connecticut and guiding the Red Storm to a second-place finish in 1998 in the Big East 6. While at Manhattan, Fraschilla was 85-35, led the Jaspers to two NCAA tournaments and was in either the NCAA or the NIT every season. In 1994-95, the Jaspers upset Oklahoma in the first round of the NCAAs as a No. 13 seed and eventually lost in the second round to Arizona State. Fraschilla was named the NABC coach of the year in '94-95 after guiding Manhattan to a 26-6 record. Prior to his head coaching duties, Fraschilla was an assistant for 13 years at Providence (1989-92), Ohio State (1987-89), Ohio (1981-87), Rhode Island (1980-81) and New York Tech (1979-80).

Extractions: OUSTED IN OREGON: The Cowboys' 1998-99 season came to a screeching halt in Eugene, Ore., as UW fell to Oregon 93-72 in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament. The taller and more experienced Ducks outrebounded the Cowboys 52-29 and hit eight of their 16 3-point attempts to run away with the win. UW's top gun, sophomore center Ugo Udezue, had averaged 26.9 points per outing over his last 10 games but was limited to 13 against the Ducks. Udezue finished 4-of-15 from the field and 5-of-15 from the free-throw line. "We came in here and got beat by a good team and we just didn't have it,'' explained coach Steve McClain. "We had to have everything go right tonight to have a shot to win and, obviously, it didn't. This is the first off game Ugo has had in about 11 games and give Oregon credit because they had an awful lot to do with it.'' SOLID SEASON: Although it didn't have a good ending, UW's 1998-99 season was a positive one for the Cowboys. With most of the players either playing for their third coach in as many seasons or playing their first year at the Division I level, UW finished 18-10 in McClain's first season and posted the program's first postseason tournament win since 1991. McClain brought his up-tempo style with him from Texas Christian and the Cowboys averaged 81.6 points per game - the seventh highest single-season figure in school history. "I'm not going to be down on the season because of (the loss to Oregon),'' McClain said. "This team accomplished a lot to win 18 games and make it to the postseason after going through what they went through. We had a good year and we have nothing to be ashamed of. The ride has been fun but it's over now and we have to build from here.''
