Extractions: Nov. 19, 2001 COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Maryland baseball coach Terry Rupp and assistant coach/recruiting coordinator Gregg Kilby announced Monday that three student-athletes have the Terrapins. Jeremy Hunt (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Matt Maropis (Export, Pa.) and Josh Murray (Tampa, Fla.) will all be members of the baseball team beginning in the 2003 season. "Coming off a large recruiting class in 2001, our needs for this recruiting class were more specific," commented Kilby. "We feel like we met those needs by signing two of the top infielders in the country along with a two-way player that can help us on the mound and at the plate. All three players were heavily recruited and we are very pleased they chose the University of Maryland." Hunt (6-2, 210) is a right-handed pitcher/first baseman who hails from St. Petersburg, Fla. Hunt spent the last three seasons at Jesuit High School in Tampa, Fla. before transferring to Northside Christian this season. Hunt was tabbed the No. 38 prospect in the state of Florida and the nation's No. 187 prospect by Prospect Plus/Baseball America. Last summer, Hunt participated in the Team One National Showcase in Tempe, Arz. while also playing at the Team One East Coast Showcase in Clemson, S.C. At the 2001 Team One Florida tryouts, Hunt was labeled the ninth-best prospect at the tryout. "Jeremy is a strong pitcher who throws consistently in the upper 80s and tops out between 91-92 mph while possessing an advanced breaking ball," said Kilby. "We feel that he will have an immediate impact on our pitching staff and he also has the ability to swing the bat with power."

Extractions: Collectible price: Average review score: The only book! This book was written several years ago when running was at its peak. When marathons were the only race worth doing. George Sheehan reached right inside the skull of the runner and was able to put into words the feelings that many of us felt at the time. He was merely describing the physiological effect of positive addiction. No-one else has managed to achieve this since. His clinics and lectures were unique and epitomised the man and his writing. This is the bible for the runner, it will never date. Regrettably someone stole my well thumbed dog eared and underlined copy. I hope that it is reprinted soon Transcending; paradoxical George is the man who runs through my mind in search of a kismet. I understand that he wrote all of this book after running. It has a beautiful endorphin-like quality to it. I have read hundreds of books about life and our existence, but George seems to sum of the paradoxical nature of goals and virtue and suffering and death as well as anyone. The extreme importance of knocking out a 5 minute mile and the utter insignificance of it all. George's passion has left an indelible impression on me for eternity - and I am forever grateful. An excellent book for individuals who like running.

Unlike the other events, vault has no specific requirements and each vault has its own start value. Gymnasts perform complicated vaults in different body positions such as tucked, piked or stretched. Judges watch for proper body alignment, form, quick repulsion, the height and distance traveled, as well as the number of saltos and twists. Generally, the more saltos (a flip or somersault) and twists, the higher the difficulty value of the vault. In addition, gymnasts strive to "stick" their landings by taking no extra steps. UNEVEN PARALLEL BARS Often a crowd favorite, the uneven bars demand excellent upper-body strength, split-second timing and an aggressive approach. The routine should flow from one movement to the next without pauses, extra swings or additional supports. Three release moves are required: one that goes from the low bar to catch the high bar, one that goes from the high bar to catch the low bar, and a third that releases and catches the same bar. Several other elements are required in the routine, including moving the gymnast's center of gravity in toward the bar. Perfect form, straight body lines in the vertical position and a stuck landing are essential.

Extractions: 10:39 AM CST on Wednesday, December 24, 2003 By EVAN GRANT / The Dallas Morning News The honeymoon may officially be over, but the marriage between Alex Rodriguez and the Rangers survives. After more than six weeks of off-again, on-again talks with Boston about swapping Rodriguez for Manny Ramirez, pitching prospect Jon Lester and cash, Rangers owner Tom Hicks finally pulled the plug on the deal Tuesday. This time, Hicks said, it's for good. The Rangers will retain Rodriguez, who has seven years left on his 10-year, $252 million contract (although he can opt out of the last three). The Rangers will attempt to patch up any remaining differences from a simmering feud between Rodriguez and manager Buck Showalter. The Rangers will go forward with off-season plans, having perhaps as little as $3 million to spend on free agents because of Hicks' self-imposed $75 million payroll cap. In a last-ditch attempt to salvage the deal, Hicks spoke twice with Boston owner John Henry on Tuesday. Hicks indicated that he was willing to further compromise on the cash considerations that were the biggest obstacle to the deal. Hicks originally asked for $25 million, then dropped the request to between $13 million and $15 million last week. The Red Sox had not been willing to budge until Tuesday, but Hicks said the sides never got very close.
