He arrived there after serving four years as the head baseball coach at Mississippi State where he led the Bulldogs to a College World Series appearance in 1998, two consecutive NCAA Super Regional berths (2000 and 2001), four straight NCAA Regional berths and compiled a 164-88 overall record. In nine years as a head coach at both Mississippi State (1998-2001) and Old Dominion (1990-94), he has amassed a 353-174 record and .670 winning percentage. Giving to Athletics Head Coach Office: 310 Stadium Bill Breene is set to begin his fifth season as head coach of the recently resurrected UB baseball program. After almost a 20-year absence, the University at Buffalo reinstated baseball as a varsity sport in November of 1998 and began play as an NCAA Division I independent in 2000. Last season (2003) marked UB's fourth as a member of the Mid-American Conference, a conference nationally recognized for its rich baseball tradition. The return to coaching for Breene signified a career that has come full circle. He began his career in intercollegiate athletics as an assistant baseball coach at his alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was a four-year starter for the Golden Eagles. Breene attended USM as both an undergraduate and graduate student, majoring in Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Athletic Administration and Coaching, respectively. "When I was asked if I would be interested in rebuilding our baseball program, I was thrilled," Breene said. "Having been here (UB) throughout the entire athletic upgrade endeavor, I knew that we would be given the support and opportunity to be successful. UB has done that by providing us with a budget to compete, allowing us to travel to regions where we can get games in early March, and continuing efforts to renovate Amherst Audubon Field to a level comparable to other MAC schools. In a short time, we have built a great foundation for the future of the program."

Coach Smith was the Assistant Director of Athletic Performance at Pacific before heading to San Jose State University for a short stint. With Smith back in Stockton the Athletic Performance Center has been revamped. The weight room was upgraded to 10 Weightlifting Platforms built into the floor, 10 Squat Racks, 10 Bench Presses (9 adjustable Incline Benches), 6 adjustable Plyometric Boxes, 80 Olympic Weightlifting Bumper Plates, 10 Olympic Weightlifting bars, and 5 Ultra-light bars. "Our Athletic Director, Lynn King, understands the importance of Strength and Conditioning and has shown his support by helping to upgrade the facilities and equipment each year," said Smith. The Conditioning Room contains the 1,500 sq/ft Swain SportsMat floor which decreases impact forces, is used during plyometric workouts, core strengthening and agility activities. In addition to the floor the conditioning room now houses 15 Schwinn Spin Bikes for low impact team conditioning. Injured athletes can now wheel a spin bike from the conditioning room and take it to practice to mainatin fitness levels when not able to run. This year's focus has been the purchasing of 5 Tendo Sports Powerlyzers. These units measure the speed and powerout of the athletes' movements. The athletes will now have a quantified measure of how fast they move during an exercise. The athletes see the power output measured in watts or the velocity measured in meters per second, and they can try to beat that number every rep. Each repetition's velocity and powerout is measured and can be recorded.
