Extractions: Men's Olympic basketball became an official sport in 1936 at the Berlin Games. The tournament was held outdoor on courts of clay and sand. On the day of the final it rained heavily, turning the courts to mud, which made it difficult to dribble and undoubtedly contributed to the low score of 19-8. In the end, the United States defeated Canada for the gold. In 1989 the Federation Internationale de Basketball Amateur (FIBA) membership voted to allow professionals to join amateurs in the Olympics. Women's basketball made its Olympic debut at the 1976 Games in Montreal, Canada. The Soviet women won the gold medal, and the U.S. women took home the silver medal.

Extractions: Athletics at St. Thomas College had an early and precarious beginning. On Thanksgiving Day 1892 St. Thomas College defeated Carbondale high school in the first recorded football game. In 1893 a college Dramatic Society production was held to raise money for the library and to buy football uniforms. There appears to have been a couple games played in 1893 as well, but there was no regular schedule. The first full football schedule occurred in 1898 when the Tommies went 8 and 1 and shut out all of their opponents, after losing the first game of the year 6-5 to Keystone Academy. In 1908 the Tommies went undefeated and unscored upon. But in 1911 football was dropped. It was reinstalled in 1916 and remained a full time sport until 1960. Right before WWI Bill Moore effectively became athletic director at the College. For 12 years he coached all sports and organized a few. A basketball team was organized, after a few false starts, in 1916-1917. The team went undefeated during the 1921-22 and 1922-23 seasons and had a 40 game winning streak that ended in January 1924.

Extractions: Named General Manager to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the start of the 2004 season, Paul DePodesta became the third-youngest person to be hired as a big-league G.M. When Frank McCourt bought the L.A. Dodgers, he knew his team needed a change and, according to McCourt, We wanted to find the best possible person. We found that man in Paul. DePodesta is now tackling the task of turning around a team that has not won a postseason game in fifteen years. The former Assistant General Manager to the Oakland Athletics, DePodesta is uniquely qualified to do just that. When the Oakland Athletics offered DePodesta the position of Assistant General Manager in 1999, the team was one of the worst in the league, with six miserable seasons in a row and one of the lowest payrolls in baseball. It was the perfect opportunity for DePodesta to try something truly innovative; entrenched in ingrained thinking and outdated systems, the stagnant team needed the smart management and creative approach that DePodesta and General Manager Billy Beane brought. The conventional wisdom in Major League Baseball is that wealthy teams who spend three times as much on talent as poor teams will win. But in the four seasons since DePodesta first joined the team, the As won more regular season games than the New York Yankees, who, during the same period, spent $350 million more on player payroll than the Athletics. By re-thinking how the system works, by asking what DePodesta calls the naïve question (If we werent already doing it this way, is this the way we would start?), he has revolutionized the way baseball is managed, and created one of the best teams in the league.
