Bahrain - Eating The Bahraini Way Brief overview of food culture in bahrain with recipe for Baba Ghanoush. http://www.settlement.org/cp/english/bahrain/eating.html
Extractions: E ATING THE B AHRAINI W AY T raditional Bahraini dishes use fish, meat, rice and dates. The best-known traditional food of Bahrain is machbous , fish or meat served with rice. Muhammar is brown sweet rice served with sugar or dates. Bahrainis also eat typical Arabic food such as falafel (deep-fried balls of ground chickpeas served in pita bread) and shawarma (lamb or chicken carved from a rotating spit and wrapped in flat bread). Snacks such as small fried potato cakes and sambousas , crispy pastry cases filled with meat, cheese, sugar or nuts, can be bought in the souks (markets). B ecause there is so little agricultural land on the islands, Bahrain produces only a fraction of its own food requirements; its main crops are dates, bananas, citrus fruits, mangoes, pomegranates, tomatoes and cucumbers. The land supports only a few thousand goats, cattle and sheep. Bahrain has to import much of its food. However, the fishing industry provides plenty of fish and shrimps. S ince many workers in Bahrain are from India and Pakistan, many restaurants offer Indian and Pakistani food. Manama, the cosmopolitan capital, has restaurants that serve foods from all over the world. T he drinking of coffee is a traditional part of the Bahraini welcome. Three cupfuls of water and a rounded teaspoon of coffee

Extractions: ADVERTISING INFORMATION Bahrain - C ulture B ahrain is the largest island in an archipelago off the east coast of Saudi Arabia, accessible by a causeway adjoining the two countries. An adequate freshwater supply, unique in the region, and the benefits of having one of the largest oil refineries in the Gulf, has given the country great prosperity. Water sports, golf, tennis, and horseracing are enjoyed throughout the country. Manama, The souk lies in the centre of the old town, near the archway of Bab al-Bahrain and, although much of the surrounding area is modern, the street layout and division of occupations still follows traditional lines. Tours to historic sights operate daily. They include the renovated home of a pearl merchant, the old Portuguese forts and the excavations at Saar where visitors can actually walk around the 4000 year-old town. Artefacts in abundance have been found there and one of the most famous is a perfectly preserved pearl, possibly the oldest in the world. It is now on display at the Bahrain National Museum which houses a fine display of Bahrain's history and heritage and is open six days a week.
