Extractions: The image of badminton as a quiet court sport belies the agility, dexterity, concentration and body strength required for competition play. In fact, the University of Ottawa's star badminton men's player this year suffered a knee injury serious enough to take him off the court for most of the season, says veteran coach Dominic Soong, an ex-world badminton champion. The loss of former gold medallist Jeff Walak in this year's play knocked the University of Ottawa's badminton team out of the top ranks of the eastern university division. The team was locked into fifth place nationally and out of play-off contention altogether. It was bad luck for ateam that has taken bronze, silver or gold in national play for the last eight years.

The Knights also got victories from Mai Vue Vang at No. 2 singles, Katelyn Larson at No. 4 singles and Mai Tria Lee and Kaabao Yang at No. 2 doubles. "Either one of those matches would have been big, but I would say my No. 2 doubles was a pivotal one," Harding coach Tracy Hrouda said. "They had lost to [Johnson] twice this year." St. Paul city schools made up the top four seeds at state, and three of them advanced to the final four. "It went better than we thought," Bryant said.

March 4, 2004 - Moon Valley High School graduate Richard Jefferson, now a star player on the NBA's New Jersey Nets returned to high school March 4 to witness the retirement of his high school basketball jersey, number 44. This means that no MVHS player will wear that number again. Coach John Boie, who still coaches at Moon Valley, was on hand to introduce the 1998 graduate and member of that year's state 4A championship basketball team. Jefferson went on to attend the University of Arizona three years and was drafted in the 13th round by the National Basketball Association. Jefferson enjoyed his visit and reminisced with old friends, coaches and teachers at the high school.

Extractions: From Kim McGowan - JCR Sports Rep At Badock Hall we encourage anyone willing to 'have a go' to join our intramural teams - the emphasis is placed on participation rather than intensive training (that is what the University teams are for!). This said, in true Badock tradition we continue to enjoy relative success in a variety of sports. This year we have been able to field two netball teams, hockey, football, basketball and badminton teams - which is far more than the majority of Halls. In addition - unlike other Halls - we have had FOUR teams in the Five-a-Side lunchtime leagues, allowing many members of Hall to play with their friends. On Thursday lunchtime our team "Bernard" has been particularly successful: they are set to win the cup, having won all matches so far! The basketball team is currently undefeated and there have been notable triumphs for hockey, netball and badminton too. After a shaky start the football team, in their new strip, have been able to beat Hiatt Baker and the Badock team from last year. They look forward to continued success and hope to end the season within in the top 3 places of the League. A number of dedicated athletes in Hall have entered the Bristol Half Marathon. Their intention is to raise money for various charities from their efforts on this particularly gruelling 13.1 mile course.
