Extractions: Four Banting Memorial High School badminton players capped off a dominating season with a good showing at the provincial championships held in Ajax last week. Brad DeLuca, Nic Truong, Bhadresh Patel and Wendel Traczuk earned the right to compete in the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association because of their results at the Georgian Bay championships last month. While in Ajax, DeLuca stayed in the 'A' flight and finished seventh out of 36 players in boys singles action. Patel made it to the second round of the 'B' flight, finishing 20th out of 36 players. Truong and Traczuk finished fourth in the 'B' flight of boys doubles, placing them 12th out of 36 doubles teams. The awards night proved to be a surprise for coach Dale Grummett. He was honoured by OFSAA for the 32 years he has dedicated to coaching badminton at the high school level, including the last six years he has been retired from teaching in the classroom. "I certainly didn't expect it," Grummett said with a laugh.

Extractions: Times Sports Editor Northeast High sophomore Nastasja Avramovic encountered a dilemma entering the spring sports season. A member of the girls volleyball team in the fall, Avramovic wanted to take part in athletic competition during the spring. Decisions, decisions, decisions. Eventually, the Lawndale resident narrowed her options to track-and-field and soccer. Each appeared to be an attractive choice, especially soccer, since Northeast is usually contending for the Public League championship. However, before committing to either sport, Avramovic spoke with Northeast physical education teacher Karen Barrett. Barrett, who's taught at Cottman and Algon for 16 years, offered her another alternative: badminton. Badminton? The game played at summer cookouts? The recreation that requires players to volley a "birdie" back and forth over a net? That badminton? "Don't you play that at the beach?" Avramovic asked. But Barrett the school's badminton coach was serious. So Avramovic, 16, decided to keep an open mind and give it a try. She quickly learned that the game indeed requires athletic ability. Her scraped and bruised knees are proof.

Extractions: STAFF WRITER Recently, Calvin has expanded its extracurricular sports to include badminton intramurals. Headed by the efforts of Michael Bloem, the intramural badminton program started just two weeks ago. With the activity just beginning, the meetings are still very informal. At this point in time it is being run in an open gym format, with a come-as-you-like philosophy. This means that there are no pressing require-ments for the people that choose to take part. Each night there is a different group of people that show up at any given time. Presently the intramural badminton time is 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday nights, in the East gym. Four nets are set up, and people start pick-up games by challenging others present to a match. Calvin has always hosted a spring badminton tournament, but this is the first time that there will be year-round badminton, even if it is in a casual setting. In other

Badminton At University In Spain teams have a similar level than the rest in these competitions in the popular sports, the level acquired by the university teams in badminton is usually lower http://www.searchiberia.com/articles/publish/article_12.shtml
Extractions: Sport is really important in order to keep healthy and that's the reason why it is part of our education from the time we are children. We are taught how to develop our movement skills, and sport is a great excuse to do practice. Indeed, sport accompanies us in our education until we finish high-school, but many of us go on practising even after our graduation. To those who continue their studies at university, there should be a chance to keep on practising sports. With its liberal and broad-minded approach, university does not only support those students who practice the commonest sports but also the minority groups who play badminton, table-tennis, fencing, ... aiding in their development. Most universities own sports centres. They organise courses on aerobic, fitness, and rent the courts and grounds to those students who want to play. Yet, playing is not enough for most of them, who also enjoy competing. That is the reason why universities creat their teams. However, just the best players in each university can enter the team and have the privilege of representing their university. The most important event is the Olimpiadas Universitarias (University Olympics), which takes place every year at the beginning of May. But being in the team is not enough in order to participate in this event. The situation varies among the different sports: while the trainer is the one who decides in the classical team sports, an internal competition takes place to select the players in the individual sports. This is the traditional Torneo Rector. Anyway, in order to acquire the desired level, the university teams ought to compete along the season.
