Extractions: December 22, 2000 BY LILLIE DREMEAUX "We definitely communicated," said co-captain Karen Lange 02, "but Im not sure how much [the meeting] was productive." "It pretty much just postponed whats going on," agreed co-captain Siobhan Carty 01. President Al Bloom, who led the meeting with Provost Jennie Keith and Athletic Director Bob Williams, had a more optimistic point of view. "It was a wonderful, very constructive meeting," he said. "I was inspired by the students dedication to their sport and by their commitment to raising its national visibility." "Al Bloom told us the ARC [Athletic Review Committee] is meeting next semester to discuss the status of club teams," Carty said. The administrators told the team that the reason the board had demoted badminton was to make a clear distinction between teams that recruit and those that do not. According to their plan, badminton should not be a club sport, not a varsity one, because it does not recruit. But Bloom said that the ARC would conduct "a full review of the club sport program over next semester" and that they "may want to reexamine the premise that only sports which receive support in the form of admissions spaces can remain in the intercollegiate program."

Extractions: This years edition of the 2002 - 2003 weekly badminton recreation club has been meeting on Monday evenings from five until seven , immediately following South Grenville team sports practices. The main purpose of the club is to get students and staff out to play badminton in a very informal setting, while at the same time gaining exercise in an enjoyable manner. For some of the more dedicated and intense badminton players, it is also a great way to prepare for the upcoming school varsity team which will compete in LGSSAA competitions in the spring. On the varsity and rookie team, there is room for singles players (two men and two women), doubles players (two teams of women and two teams of men), and mixed doubles players (two teams of one female and one male). All students are welcome to play, and there are occasional weeks where there are special staff guests to play against. There is a small fee to play for the upkeep of the nets and shuttlecocks. We are looking forward to seeing interested students in Gym A/B on Monday nights.

Extractions: May 12, 2004 Vol. 29 No. 41 Back to Sports Badminton - Successful season on floor for Falcons Three FCHS teams made it to provincials by winning their zone. Flemmer and Millis qualified in the senior boys doubles division, Light in the intermediate girls singles and Richardson and Shapka in junior mixed doubles. Light placed third last year in Category 2 at provincials but could not make it this year due to extenuating circumstances. We were hoping she would have improved to a top-two finish this year as she was beginning to dominate even more than last year, frequently beating even our top junior and intermediate boys in practices. Next year we have high hopes for her. Flemmer and Millis placed fourth last year being beaten out by Calgary and Edmonton teams as well as a team from the South Zone. This year they participated in tournaments with the same South team from Taber, unfortunately they were unable to beat them, finishing in second place in two tournaments.
