Extractions: Badminton was invented long ago; its origins date back at least two thousand years to the game of battledore and shuttlecock played in ancient Greece, India and China. A surprisingly long history for one of the Olympics newest sports! Badminton took its name from Badminton House in Gloucestershire, the home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport was played in the last century. By coincidence, Gloucestershire is now the base for the International Badminton Federation. The IBF was founded in 1934 with nine members - Canada, Denmark, England, France, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales. The USA joined four years later. Membership grew steadily over the following years with a surge in new members after badminton's Olympic debut at Barcelona. As the sport's development program grows, the current 130 members is expected to increase further. The first major IBF tournament was the Thomas Cup (world men's team championships) in 1948. Since then, the number of world events has increased to seven, with the addition of the Uber Cup (ladies' team), World Championships, Sudirman Cup (mixed team), World Juniors, World Grand Prix Finals and the World Cup. The World Cup invitational event started in 1981 and is organized by the International Management Group (IMG). The World Cup series is due to end in 1997 and the IBF is considering organizing exhibition matches featuring the world's top players to replace the World Cup.

Extractions: by Mike Morrison Billed as "the world's fastest racket sport," badminton traces its roots back to the 5th century BCE. The Chinese originally played a version called Ti Zian Ji, a game that used a shuttlecock like badminton, but was played with the feet. Modern badminton began in India in the 1800s and was known as "poona." In its current form, badminton resembles tennis , in that it can be played by either singles or doubles and rackets are used to hit an object over a net. Badminton, however, is a much faster sport. Instead of a ball, badminton uses a shuttlecock, which is made of cork and real goose feathers and can travel at speeds up to 260 kilometers per hour (162 mph). A badminton match follows a "best-of-three" format (two games are needed to win the match). In men's and doubles play, the first side to 15 points wins, while in women's play, the first side to 11 wins (must win by two). Only the serving team can score a point, but unlike volleyball, a serve that hits the net and drops onto the opposition's side of the court earns a point for the serving team.

Extractions: History Olympic Venues Olympic Sports Greece Today ... Information Badminton Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports Often one of the most "misunderstood" sports in the Olympics, badminton is the national sport in certain Asian countries, such as Indonesia and Malaysia. The game reached the Olympic stage as a exhibition sport at the 1972 Munich Games. It returned as an exhibition sport in Seoul in 1988 and was accepted with full medal status in 1992 at Barcelona. Badminton is played by two or four players, either indoors or outdoors on a marked court. A net is fixed across the middle of the court which is five feet high at the center and 5 1/2 ft at the posts. The game is played with a shuttlecock made initially of cork, but now of rubber with feathers attached. The shuttlecock is hit back and forth with the use of racquets strung with nylon string and weighing about six ounces. When one of the players fails to return the shuttlecock, a point is scored. Fifteen points wins the game, providing the winner's score exceeds that of the loser by at least 2 points. It has been estimated that the badminton ball can reach a speed up to 260km per hour, which requires a high degree of dexterity and quick reflexes by the players. Badminton took its name from Badminton House In Gloucestershire, the home of the Duke of Beaufort, where the sport was played in the 19 th century.
Extractions: Nathan Robertson You know that feeling when something instinctively feels right? Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms do when they're playing badminton together. And they are confident that their on-court chemistry can help them win an Olympic medal this summer. The duo, who will both turn 27 shortly before the Games, have produced a string of consistently fine performances in the past 12 months that has cemented their place as fourth in the world in mixed doubles. "We're a natural pair which not everybody is," said Nottingham-born Robertson. "We can read each other's game quite well and know whereabouts we're moving and know where our shots are going, so it doesn't take a lot of court time to know where we're going to hit it. "We've got some sort of natural understanding on the court which is very helpful."
