Extractions: The look of the campus. By Peter Wood he official notice just arrived: Summer is over. I am referring, of course, to the annual "Almanac Issue" of The Chronicle of Higher Education , thick with charts and graphs, that arrives like an un-seasonal arctic breeze in the sultry last days of August. Care to know the average SAT scores by sex and by racial and ethnic group of last year's freshmen? The proportion of 18- to 24-yead-olds in college? The attitudes of full-time faculty members? How about the largest private gifts to higher education? Total return on college endowments? I admit I turn the pages eagerly. Here is American higher education reduced to its industrial organization and consumerist profiles. Here is the dust in industry (43.8 percent of college presidents have "education" degrees; 89 percent of 4-year public colleges offer "distance-education" programs) and the sum in consumerism (43.7 percent of dependent college students get federal aid; 36.9 percent of college women chose their college partly on the basis offers of financial assistance, but only 30.7 percent of college men.) I don't mean to imply the ideals that make higher education higher

As we will see, three factors have been especially significant: The narrowing of the focus of classroom teachers and lecturers particularly as they deal with increased workloads and the national curriculum A growing belief in the need to attend to learning beyond the classroom if educational achievement is to rise and if people's orientation and skill base is to remain relevant to the economy (e.g. Bentley 1998; Leadbeater 2000). An aspect of this has been the growth in use of problematic notions such as lifelong learning A desire to ensure that school and college life is marked by reasonable behaviour and is attractive to potential students and their parents.

Their duties depend on the individuals they serve and on the settings in which they work. Educational, vocational, and school counselors Elementary school counselors observe younger children during classroom and play activities and confer with their teachers and parents to evaluate the childrens strengths, problems, or special needs. They also help students develop good study habits. Elementary school counselors do less vocational and academic counseling than do secondary school counselors. School counselors at all levels help students understand and deal with social, behavioral, and personal problems. These counselors emphasize preventive and developmental counseling to provide students with the life skills needed to deal with problems before they occur and to enhance the students personal, social, and academic growth. Counselors provide special services, including alcohol and drug prevention programs and conflict resolution classes. Counselors also try to identify cases of domestic abuse and other family problems that can affect a students development. Counselors work with students individually, with small groups, or with entire classes. They consult and collaborate with parents, teachers, school administrators, school psychologists, medical professionals, and social workers in order to develop and implement strategies to help students be successful in the education system.

Access advice Laws Effects Help and info So should cannabis be legalised (so that you can buy it from approved outlets) or decriminalised (so that possession is not a crime)? Or would legalisation or decriminalisation only encourage the use of a dangerous drug? And what about medical use? The use of cannabis, both as a medicine and for pleasure, is thought to stretch back up to 4,000 years. Legal controls in the UK date from 1928, but it wasn't until 1973 that the medical use of cannabis was banned, despite some evidence that the drug can relieve the symptoms of certain conditions: in multiple sclerosis (MS) and glaucoma, for example. MS sufferer Angela Devis, 24, from Greenwich in London, told VEE-TV that cannabis really helps control her pain and discomfort. In 1998 a House of Lords Select Committee Report suggested that the law should be changed so that doctors can prescribe cannabis and its derivatives. According to the organisation Drugscope , it now seems likely that doctors will soon be allowed to prescribe a range of cannabis-derived medicines, though not cannabis itself.
