Opposition leaders and observers, however, alleged widespread violations and police clashed with protesters twice during an hours-long standoff in central Baku. Aliev's son Ilham Aliev had nearly 80 percent of the votes with more than 3,500 of Azerbaijan's 5,111 districts reporting, while his closest rival Isa Gambar had about 11 percent, according to the Central Election Commission. As the count progressed Aliev cleared a majority of the votes cast, enabling him to avoid a runoff, it said. Aliev led a field of eight candidates, standing alone for the ruling Yeni Azerbaijan party after his father hospitalized in the United States pulled out of the race less than two weeks ago. More than 71 percent of the former Soviet republic's 4.4 million electorate voted, election commission chairman Mazahir Panahov said.

Ashkenazim first settled in Azerbaijan in the 19 th century as part of Czarist Russias attempt to bring Russian culture into the region. A second wave Ashkenazim , who were fleeing from the Nazis arrived during World War II. The Mountain Jews, whose roots extend back 2,000 years, speak a distinct dialect called Juhari, a northern Iranian language. They are a deeply traditional and close-knit community. Throughout the Soviet years, the Mountain Jews were forced to rid their language of its Hebrew elements and close all cultural institutions. Yet they displayed remarkable resilience, clinging steadfastly to Jewish traditions and values. In recent years, their country was torn apart by war with Armenia. Though their land is rich in oil, iron, copper and other natural resources, poor infrastructure and corruption threaten any real economic progress. Pollution and massive overuse of pesticides have nearly devastated the environment. With the fall of communism in the former Soviet Union, JDC was able to establish a strong and growing presence in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan. It is original, poignant and reflects the richness of the country by itself. It constitutes the abundance of meat, fish and vegetables dishes seasoned by sweet scented greens and spices. Any experienced gourmand visiting the republic would be amazed by fine taste and delicate flavour of the Azerbaijan cuisine. Dishes are unique and original, and can not be confused with dishes of other national cuisines. The Azerbaijan cookery has preserved old cooking methods although has modified them taking into account up-to-date techniques. In cafes and restaurants some national dishes are served in special crockery in which the dish is prepared. Below are some traditional recipies that constitute the core of the national cuisine. Dovga Piti Kufta Bozbash Parcha Bozbash Dushbara Ingredients Mutton-108g Wheat flour-40g Egg-1 Onions-18g Coriander-25g Dried mint-1g Grape vinegar Pepper and Salt Garlic Cooking Make broth. Mince meat and onions, add spices to make the filling. Roll tight unleavened dough of 1mm thick and cut into uniform squares. Put 2-3g of the filling in the mid- dle of each square. Fold the squares lengthwise or diago- nally. Bend back the ears. Boil in broth for 5 minutes so that the dumplings rise to the surface. Dumplings are made very small so that you can scoop four or five of them with a table spoon at a time. Grape vinegar with garlic is served separately and the dumplings are seasoned with coriander leaves or dried mint.
