It includes one autonomous region, Nagorno Karabakh; and one autonomous republic, Nakhchyvan, which is separated from Azerbaijan proper by the Zangezur region of Armenia; as well as several small islands in the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan has approximately 500 miles of Caspian Sea coastline, many hot and cold mineral springs and spas, approximately 1,250 rivers (only 21 of which are longer than 60 miles) and over 250 lakesLake Gadzhikabul being the largest at 6 square miles. One of the most beautiful lakes in the Caucasus is Lake Goygol (Blue Lake) located on the northeastern slopes of the Murovdag Range. About 4,100 species of flora have been registered in Azerbaijan, whose large forests cover 5.3 million acres. Over 12,000 species of fauna have been identified, including wild boar and coypu among the reeds of the lowlands; gazelle in the steppes; mountain goats, leopard, bear, and lynx in the mountains; pheasant, francolin, great and little bustards, and varieties of ducks and geese; and salmon, trout, and sturgeon in the rivers and Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan has four nature preserves: the Zakataly Preserve for the protection of primeval forests, mountain meadows, the Dagestan bison, and stone and pine martens; the Turkmenchay Preserve to protect fragile arid soil and juniper and pistachio forests; the Eldar Preserve to protect ancient elder pines; and the Kyzylagach Preserve to protect wintering-over areas for migrating birds.
