    Extractions: The course aims to acquaint students with the history and character of epic and heroic poetry as exemplified in vernacular languages of Western Europe in the Middle Ages. Through the study of works from three literatures, students will gain an insight into the factors which contributed to the formation of epic and heroic poetry and the cultural contexts in which this occurred, the diversity of its subject-matter, the ethos by which it is informed, and the poetics which shapes its written forms. (No language requirement.) This course examines, on a comparative basis, the circumstances which led to an early flowering of vernacular prose fiction in Spain, from 1490s to the death of Cervantes. The principal comparisons will be England, but some attention will be paid to parallel developments in Italy and France. (No language requirement.)

Contents of most volumes 1972- 2004 Some volumes are not yet available on this website The Calaby Bibliography John Henry Calaby (1922-1998) held a life-long interest in natural history, expressed throughout his 42-year career in CSIRO, initially in the Division of Entomology, and subsequently in the newly formed Wildlife Survey section. The latter evolved to become the present Division of Wildlife and Ecology, from which Calaby retired in 1987. Further information on his career and achievements are detailed by Sharman, G.B. (1998). John Henry Calaby (1922-1998). A Biographical Memoir. Australian Mammalogy 19: 437-447. Calaby’s research interests ranged widely, with a primary focus on vertebrate biology, especially mammalogy, on which he published over 130 papers and articles. Less well-known, but enormously valuable was the comprehensive bibliography on the mammals of Australia and its dependencies, and the New Guinea region, which he assembled and published as a service to the community from a wide range formal and less formal publications. The bibliography begins with 1958, the year of the Society's beginning.

     Extractions: Robert G Barrett iction writer brought up in Bondi, when it was not so trendy in the 50s, and leaving school at 14. Robert G went to Bondi Beach Public School and Randwick Boys High, as did another Dinkum Aussie and no close friend of Saddam Hussein, Richard Butler , about the same time. Wonder if they know each other? Robert and Richard that is, not the madman! B arrett became a butcher and worked as a boner in meatworks in Sydney and Townsville until 1980 when he was injured at work by a falling carcass of meat. It would be good to see what he said on the insurance claim form...."there I was, just standing there, minding my own business, when....." Whilst recovering he did 3 writing courses at the Workers' Education Association and wrote a short story on his larger-than-life character Les Norton which was published as A Hard Man in Australian Penthouse . He was up and running! Soon came You Wouldn't Be Dead For Quids , published in 1984, and now in its 14th reprint. An author was born. H is character of Les Norton boots, scoots, toots and roots his way from Kings Cross to Bondi Beach. As one review said "pray to God they don't get published overseas". Not exactly complimentary to a writer with over 1 million copies of his books sold. However, winners are grinners and R G Barrett can laugh all the way to the bank or his Les Norton paid for house in Terrigal on the beautiful Central Coast of NSW. The first part of the house was paid for from the compo from the meat incident.
