Extractions: - Newsletter article Research Experiences for Undergraduates The Institute for Astronomy (IfA) of the University of Hawaii (UH) at Manoa expects to offer between six and eight research assistant positions for the summer of 2004. These positions are funded through the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program. This REU program will provide undergraduates who are considering a career in science with the opportunity to engage in research with professional astronomers working on cutting-edge problems in astrophysics. The REU students will be full-time research assistants to a faculty mentor at the Institute and will work on specific aspects of an ongoing research program.

The Joint Australian Centre for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica , JACARA, has been constituted to facilitate Australian participation in the development of Antarctic astronomy. It has joint nodes at the School of Physics in the University of New South Wales, and at Mount Stromlo and Siding Springs Observatories in the Australian National University. JACARA receives advice from the Australian Working Group for Antarctic Astronomy . This group was created by the National Committee for Astronomy in order to study the scientific potential of the Antarctic Plateau for astronomy. JACARA works closely with CARA, the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica . CARA is a consortium of US universities run from Yerkes Observatory of the University of Chicago. JACARA are promoting activities, both nationally and internationally, that will facilitate our ability to operate an Antarctic Observatory and maximise the science that can be produced. Currently the major focus is on site testing to quantify the limitations to astronomical observations across the spectrum and determine the optimum site for an international observatory. Extractions: Lowell Observatory and Boston University have formed a partnership for the joint use and development of the 72-inch Perkins Telescope. Under this agreement, effective August 1, 1998, each institution will equally divide the use of the telescope during the year. Lowell Observatory will be responsible for operational support while the two institutions will jointly and individually develop instrumentation for use on the telescope. Boston University will locate a full time postdoctoral fellow in Flagstaff who will work with Lowell Observatory staff in optimizing the optical performance of the telescope as well as oversee the day-to-day interests of Boston University. Extractions: The group (and the department) is undergoing a massive regeneration, with a new professorial appointment and two new lectureships in Astronomy. This is further to the recent ARC postdoctoral positions. The department has also made two new appointments in physics (one lectureship, one post-Doc). These are exciting times. On December 4th 2002 there was a total solar eclipse and the best place in the world to see it was the town of Ceduna in South Australia. It just happens that the University of Tasmania operates a radiotelescope just north of Ceduna and a team of us went off to Ceduna to view the eclipse, do some science and show off our beautiful telescope.
