The sheer volume of traffic among 1100 computers is immense, and in a supercomputer, it has to travel quickly. Virginia Tech turned to cutting-edge technology from Mellanox Technologies for this critically important component. - Dror Goldenberg, Software Architect, Mellanox Corporation InfiniBand is now available on Mac OS X for any user who wishes to use it in a high-performance environment. Vu Pham, Dror Goldenberg, and Edward Bortnikov, software architects at Mellanox, were charged with porting the InfiniBand driver to Mac OS X. Since none of them had ever booted up a Mac before, let alone do any development on the Mac platform, all say their assignment was very ambitious. Factor in the need to complete the migration of a very sophisticated application to the new platform in little more than a month, and all players on the team were collectively holding their breath.
Extractions: Indiana University INDIANAPOLIS Indiana University School of Medicine is taking a close look at the faces of children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism is paying for it to do so. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, the only preventable birth defect, can have a devastating impact on its victims, but in some cases the effects are so minimal children are denied needed assistance and benefits. The NIAAA awarded IU two grants totaling $784,334 to conduct the research and manage the data. To better define the visual characteristics of the syndrome, IU researchers will use sophisticated technology and facial recognition techniques to examine the faces of children from across the globe. "Some children exhibit classic features of FAS and other children have a more mild, less visually obvious version of the disorder, which may not be as recognizable but still can result in learning disabilities and behavioral disorders," said Tatiana Foroud, Ph.D., associate professor of medical and molecular genetics at the Indiana University School of Medicine and the principal investigator of the study. Telltale signs of children with FAS are small eyes spaced far apart, an underdeveloped face, a smooth surface between the nose and upper lip, and growth retardation. The study will establish key points for recognition of FAS. To accomplish this, the talents of several disciplines are needed.

For Virginia Tech, it was important to create the new supercomputer exclusively with off-the-shelf components. And, as with any project in higher education, budget was a concern. The Power Mac G5 computers ably addressed both considerations. , ranking them by processing speed. Winning a berth near the top of the list would qualify Virginia Tech to compete for funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), through its Cyberinfrastructure program . With a proposed budget of $1 billion, the program aims to develop and support an enhanced cyberinfrastructure for science and engineering research and education.

He is in his late thirties and is visually impaired. He did not lose his vision until he was eighteen, when he was a college student majoring in Surveying Technology at Pennsylvania State University. As Jim remembers it, his whole world changed when he began to lose his sight. He had to drop out of Penn State for awhile. He reapplied as a computer science major but was counseled to change his major to Business Administration. In 1983, he graduated with a degree in Business Administration with a focus in Business Logistics. Jim is very independent. He lives alone and commutes to work each day via public transportation. He avoids rush hour traffic by leaving his apartment at 5:30 a.m. and leaving work at 2:30 p.m. His only orientation and mobility aid is a cane. His hobbies include reading and cooking. People with visual impairments can borrow books from Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic in Princeton, which provides books on audiocassettes, and the Library of Congress which provides books on diskettes. Jim prefers borrowing books from the Library of Congress because he likes their selection. Jim uses an IBM 386 computer with a standard monitor, QWERTY keyboard, and a screen reading system.
