Extractions: JAPANESE Learning Japanese is not just language learning. Since the way Japanese think is inextricably woven into their language, it is also a doorway to a new world, as well as a new way of understanding the world we think we "know." Language Courses: Japanese has been taught at Carleton since 1968. In elementary classes 101-103 all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing are equally emphasized. Students learn 46 characters (hiragana) in the first ten days. By the end of the first year, students have enough basic Japanese to survive in Japan. Intermediate classes 204-206 emphasize the development of reading skills, especially the mastery of kanji, Chinese characters, with considerable work on spoken Japanese through the use of audiovisuals. By the end of 205, students are ready to start reading Japanese books in Japanese. The college language requirement is completed with 205. Japanese 206 focuses on polishing and refining practical skills in both spoken and written Japanese. Advanced courses allow students to enjoy modern Japanese poetry and short stories in the original and discuss them in Japanese with classmates, or to read Japanese newspapers and discuss current topics in Japanese. One goal of these courses is to attain a high level of communication skills in Japanese.

Extractions: Home Who We Are Degree Programs Undergraduate Ph.D. Language Programs Chinese Japanese Korean Vietnamese ... Employment Chair: Michael A. Fuller The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at UCI brings both theoretical sophistication and scholarly rigor to the study of the literatures and cultures of East Asia. The department focuses on China, Korea, and Japan but also stresses the larger regional and global dynamics of transformation in which these cultures participate. The undergraduate curriculum The graduate program emphasizes rigorous training in language, textual analysis, and critical theories necessary to approach East Asia within the framework of multidisciplinary study. Unlike traditional East Asian literature programs, the curriculum builds upon recent developments in critical theory to decenter literary texts and shift attention to the larger world of cultural production. Subjects of inquiry within the department include film, theater, oral narratives, mass media, and political economy as well as poetry, vernacular fiction, and discursive prose genres. The program centers on a faculty whose research interests engage significant issues in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature and culture while developing connections with the larger community of scholarship at UCI. Extractions: Site last updated: The Asian Languages and Literatures Department of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst was created in 1969 with the mission of educating students primarily about China, Taiwan and Japan. Thirty-five years later we still take this mission very seriously. It is imperative that students today have the chance to learn as much as possible about Asia. The world truly is smaller, and knowledge and understanding of other cultures will carry us a long way toward world peace. We are the only department, and UMass/Amherst is the only public institution of higher education in New England, which offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Chinese and Japanese. Because of this we attract a lot of students from outside of Massachusetts and throughout the Northeast, through the New England Regional Student Program.
