    Extractions: An introductory course in the history of art can have a tremendous impact on students who take one. Even if you have never had another art history course, this will serve as an introduction and guide to a world of visual and intellectual richness that is accessible to you when you give it an earnest effort. Art history is a discipline which demands equal parts of art and science, creativity and organization. Fine Arts 0020 is a general introduction to the Arts of Asia (India, China, Japan). The works of art are important in their own contexts and we want to learn what they reveal about their parent cultures. We must also keep in mind that this art is comparable to that of other cultures as well, either because its creation was in response to similar needs, as with the art of early cultures (Weeks 1-4), or with a religion such as Buddhism (Weeks 5-6), or because of actual interaction between groups. Seen in this way the art may seem more readily understandable, more sympathetic, more human even if you know nothing about the Asian world when you begin. There are thousands of works of art available for study; they are part of our world heritage. What are they? How are they related to each other? What did they mean to their makers? What do they mean to us today? These are the questions with which we may begin our study.

    Extractions: Frances Blakemore Asian Art Grants Improving the Understanding of Asian Fine Arts in the United States Grants will be made only to tax-exempt organizations in the United States such as museums, universities and other educational or art-related institutions for programs, exhibits or publications that improve the understanding of Asian fine arts in the United States. Asia is limited to the countries of China, Japan, Korea, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, Mongolia and Tibet. Fine arts refer to paintings, graphic arts, ceramics, sculpture and textiles. Applications will be considered two times a year. One of the strengths of the collection is Hindu and Buddhist sculpture, which includes Japanese lacquered wooden and plaster images, stone works from south Asia, and lost-wax cast bronzes of India and Southeast Asia. Significant Hindu sculpture is also a feature and includes the great stone Vishnu from the Pala dynasty of Bangladesh, the charming bronze elephant-headed god, Ganesha, and the dynamic dancing figure of the god Shiva from the great bronze artists of the southern Indian Chola dynasty. Other features of the Asian art collection are: a spectacular array of Southeast Asian textiles; a range of miniature paintings from India originally intended as illustrations for albums and manuscripts; a significant collection of ukiyo-e prints from the Edo and early Meiji periods of Japan; and a rare collection of 20th century Chinese woodcuts.     Extractions: In 1959, Chicago millionaire Avery Brundage and his wife, Elizabeth, agreed to donate the first part of his vast collection of Asian art to San Francisco on the condition that the City build a new museum wing. Known as the Avery Brundage Collection, it represents 95% of the holdings of the Asian Art Museum and it consists of almost 10,000 pieces of priceless Asian art. In 1960, to meet the Brundage challenge, a $2,725,000 bond issue was passed by the voters of San Francisco to build the Asian Art Museum. Completed in 1966, the new museum opened June 10 1966 in space constructed as a wing of the deYoung Museum. The plan then was to leave the administrative responsibility in the hands of the Board of Trustees of the deYoung Museum. At the dedication, Avery Brundage said, "In presenting this collection to San Francisco my hope is that, together with the facilities of the region's great universities, it will help San Francisco and the Bay Area become one of the world's greatest centres of Oriental culture."

Among these are an extraordinary set of six limestone reliefs, acquired in 1854, from the palace of the Assyrian king Ashurnasirpal II (883-859 BCE), a Panathenaic prize amphora attributed to the Athenian artist known as the Berlin Painter, and a group of Early Christian floor mosaics from Homs, in Syria. The various artistic traditions of Asia are represented by works from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and India.     Extractions: The most extraordinary collection of Tibetan art in the Western Hemisphere is on view in eight permanent galleries, the centerpiece of which is a Buddhist Altar consecrated in 1990 by His Holiness, the 14th Dalai Lama. The Newark Museum's collection of Tibetan art has its origins in a remarkable group of items brought from the Sino-Tibetan borderland in 1911 by Dr. Albert L. Shelton, a medical missionary, with additional objects collected between 1914 and 1920. The Museum also acquired three other missionary collections from northeastern Tibet, significantly enriching its holdings in ethnographic and ceremonial art. Paintings, sculpture, ritual objects, dance masks, tents, saddles, headdress and weapons are among the featured objects.
