The minor was approved at the same time and the Ethnic Studies B.A. Option in Asian American Studies was just approved in summer 1999. Both are designed for all students, whether of Asian heritage or not, who have a particular interest in learning more about the experiences of Asians and Pacific Islanders in America, including those from central, south and southeast Asia, east Asia, the Philippines and the Pacific Islands. Extractions: The Ethnic Studies major is an interdisciplinary, liberal arts program designed to enhance students' understanding and awareness of race and ethnicity in the United States. The major focuses on racial and ethnic groups from a historical, symbolic, and contemporary perspective, expanding the students' understanding of American life. It includes a critical sociocultural, political, and economic understanding of race and ethnicity affecting people and social institutions. Foothill College's program concentrates on three American groups: African, Hispanic/Latino, and Asian. Students completing the program will take courses emphasizing one of the three groups. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES The Ethnic Studies major offers curriculum diversity desired by employers seeking employees specializing in ethnic studies. Career areas that welcome a four-year college/university degree in this major include government and academic research firms, business and human resources management offices, multinational corporations, public administration, counseling and human services. Acquired analytical skills enhance students' employability in international relations and Foreign Service careers. UNITS REQUIRED FOR MAJOR A minimum of 30 units of approved courses. Of the 30 units, a minimum of 4 units must be taken in each of the following academic disciplines: Social Sciences, Fine Arts, and Language Arts. Choose one of the program concentrations (African-American, Hispanic/Latino-American, or Asian-American) and then complete a minimum of 12 core units, 8 support units, and 6 elective units from that concentration. The major requires 30 units - Choose the additional units from any of the courses listed within your chosen concentration (i.e., African-American, Hispanic/Latino-American, or Asian-American).

Asian Americans' cancer survival rates are similar to survival rates for U.S. Whites, with significant subgroup variation. Mortality rates for most major cancers are lower than for Whites. Overall age-adjusted cancer incidence and mortality rates for Asian American women are lower than those of most other racial/ethnic groups in the United States.
