   Extractions: "We're sort of defining Asian-Americans as people who define themselves as Asian-American," says Titania Leung Inglis, the articulate, twenty-three year old deputy editor of Hyphen , a start-up Asian-American magazine based in San Francisco. Like many ethnic media, Hyphen is faced with the challenge of representing a demographic that is virtually impossible to define. Hyphen is not alone in this quandary. For post-civil rights Asian-American media trying to corner the coveted Asian-American market, there is a curious contradiction: The necessity of constructing an Asian-American identity without establishing criteria that excludes some segment of the community. That little hyphen located unassumingly between the two words represents many distinct and disparate worlds. 2000 Census Bureau statistics found that over eleven million of the American population identifies as Asian but while the numbers represent the ethnic make-up of the community, they don't account for nationality. In fact, over sixty percent are foreign born and many are legal or illegal aliens or may even have dual citizenship. Not all are technically entitled to the rights of Americans, but because of the legacy of immigration in the United States, they cannot be discounted. They are the friends, the colleagues, the neighbors, the families, the past and the future of Asian-America.

Originally, the main focus of the lecture would be on Asian-American Media in the Last Decade, but after careful reconsideration, it was pushed back to 1987, the year the Asian American International Film Festival celebrated its 10 th anniversary. Deemed the Asian American version of Brats, it was a year when many young generation filmmakers and video artists straight out of film school came into public prominence, a succession of both media literate and media conscious individuals. How do movies shape society? Roddy Bogowa's black and white "A Small Room In The Big House" filmed with a Super 8 camera, deals with this issue of media consciousness by following the life of a little boy, who has been raised in a projection room of a movie theater where his father works. With his life intimately tied to movies, the little boy's reactions toward being filmed, such as sticking the microphone in his mouth to mute all sound, is indicative of his self consciousness of the media saturated society around him. The stark black and white images are evocative of a time when personal films reigned supreme in the works of the film-makers. They brought the audience back to a period of pure innocence and joy in the appreciation of the film medium.

    Extractions: An Asian American scholar on what a "smart girl" is doing raising questions of identity by Crystal Parikh I could identify myself an Asian American scholar - but this is a tricky thing to do, and it requires all sorts of qualifications and explanations. I’m also a professor of literature, however, so confusions and complexities are not supposed to simply frighten me, but also to intrigue and inspire. So what does it mean to be an Asian American scholar? Does it mean that I am an Asian American? I am a native-born U.S. citizen, the daughter of immigrants from India. Or, I should say, one former immigrant, as my mother became a naturalized citizen years ago. But then again, she doesn’t seem to feel any less Indian for becoming an American, so is she, then, still an immigrant? Does being an “Asian American scholar” mean that I study Asian Americans? What does it mean to study Asian Americans; is an Asian American scholar to the Asian American as an entomologist is to an insect? I do study the literature and history of a group called “Asian American.” I also study the literature and history of a group called “Latino,” or sometimes “Hispanic.” I also study the literature and history of something called “America,” which, I have often felt, means something rather different who I am, despite my “birthright” citizenship. This must be the way an entomologist relates to his or her object of study, a fascination with an entirely other species of being. But then I’m told this is a name to which I have a claim, and this is rather unlike the entomologist who can never claim to be an insect.
