For the Host City, the benefits of an Olympic Games can be enormous in terms of new parks, recreational and transportation facilities, infrastructure, tourism, and jobs. Unlike most of the world's great cities, New York has never hosted an Olympic Games. We believe that it is time to bring the Olympic Games and its billions of dollars in investment and tens of thousands of new jobs to New York. The selection process for the 2012 Games is moving fast. New York has already been designated the United States Applicant City. In less than two years, the International Olympic Committee will select the Host City for the 2012 Games. One of New York's greatest strengths is the diversity of our population. To demonstrate the support of New Yorkers of every background and heritage for hosting the Olympic Games, we are bringing together the city's many civic, educational, sports, business, social service, cultural, religious and community organizations representative of our various nationality communities as members of The Nations of New York. We are pleased to invite your organization to become a member of The Nations of New York. By participating in The Nations of New York, your organization will become an integral part of New York's Olympic bid. You will receive regular materials about our Olympic bid and have the opportunity for members of your community to be part of exciting events and activities. There are no dues, costs, or financial obligations for your organization. In the coming years, The Nations of New York will help to reach out around the world to explain why the Olympic Games should be held in New York, where athletes, their families, and visitors from every nation will feel at home-for this is truly "The World's Second Home

Extractions: Buggsi Patel talks about AAHOA in the beginning, where it is today and where he hopes to take it in 2000. It's no secret that the name "Patel" has become synonymous with hotels; Indian hoteliers are deservingly proud of what they've accomplished in the hotel industry, often passing the business down from one generation to the next. It hasn't always been easy, though. Discrimination and resistance have been obstacles in the past, but thanks to associations such as the Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA), hoteliers, bankers, investors and lenders have become more educated and more aware of the value of a variety of cultures. In retrospect, 1989 was a monumental year for AAHOA Chairman Bakulesh "Buggsi" Patel. It was the year he immigrated to the United States from England, and it was also the year the AAHOA was created. No stranger to obstacles himself Buggsi came to the United States after finding it nearly impossible to finance a real estate project overseas. After serving as an apprentice to his sister already in the hospitality business Buggsi began his own business and today Lake Oswego, Ore.-based Buggsi Hospitality Group owns 16 hotels. Not bad for a man who's only been in the United States 11 years. To Buggsi, that's just part of the business and part of his aggressive nature. Recently, NREI spoke with Buggsi, whose determination and knowledge have contributed to his rapid rise in the business and AAHOA, an organization that has merely begun to take its mark on the hospitality industry.

A 15 minute walk from the World Trade Centre, Chinatown - one of the oldest and most vibrant ethnic communities in Manhattan - was economically walloped because of the September 11 attacks that destroyed the twin towers. Chinatown did not suffer any physical damage, but it was part of the Lower Manhattan area that was placed off limits by officials immediately after the attack. Roadblocks largely prevented trucks from making deliveries to businesses. Downed phone lines meant merchants could not call in payments by credit cards and pharmacies could not tap into databases to fill prescriptions.
Extractions: WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a significant display of unity and partnership, the Travel Business Roundtable (TBR) and the US Chamber of Commerce co-hosted a two-day summit from April 8-9 in Washington, DC to discuss ways to help revitalize the travel and tourism industry. Re-Igniting Growth in Travel and Tourism brought together more than 200 CEO and senior level executives along with three Cabinet Secretaries, Congressional leaders, mayors from cities across the country, and other senior Administration officials. This two day event marked a turning point for our industry in many ways, remarked Jonathan Tisch, Chairman of TBR and Chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels. Having seven Administration officials and three highly regarded members of Congress speak to a group of industry CEOs in less than 36 hours is evidence that the industry is finally being recognized in Washington, DC as vital to our nations economic prosperity and recovery. Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge, the keynote speaker at the opening dinner reception, noted that travel and tourism intersects with his departments responsibilities more than any other industry. He spoke about how the country is working to protect our borders while also ensuring that we continue to welcome international travelers. Alfonso Martinez-Fonts, Special Assistant to the Secretary of Homeland Security for the Private Sector, joined Secretary Ridge. Steve Porter, President, the Americas, Six Continents Hotels hosted the reception.

"Our winners exemplify the spirit of progress and entrepreneurship that has supported the significant growth in the Asian business market." Wells Fargo launched the Asian Business Services program in 2002 to provide outreach, education and increased access to capital among Asian business owners by forming community alliances, investing in primary research, and sponsoring key events in the diverse communities where Asian business owners live and work. To measure its success, Wells Fargo established a public goal to lend $2 billion over ten years to Asian business owners. The program was so successful that Wells Fargo increased its goal to $3 billion over the same period of time. In February 2004, Wells Fargo announced a national alliance with USPAACC and the creation of the Asian Business Leadership Award to acknowledge the business achievements and community leadership of exceptional Asian-owned businesses.
