Documentation and Links A worldwide series of digitally compiled maps include petroleum geology, geologic provinces, and oil and gas fields has been released by the U. S. Geological Survey World Energy Project . The goal of the project was to "assess the undiscovered, technically recoverable oil and gas resources of the world and report these results by the year 2000." From USGS"The world was divided into eight energy regions corresponding approximately to the economic regions of the world as defined by the U.S. Department of State. Each region was then further divided into geologic provinces on the basis of natural geologic entities and may include a dominant structural element or a number of contiguous elements. Some provinces contain multiple genetically related basins. Geologic province boundaries were delineated using data from UNESCO geologic maps, and other tectonic and geographic data. Offshore province boundaries were defined by the 2000 meter bathymetric contour from the UNESCO geologic maps (see References). Each province was assigned a unique number; the first digit is the region number. An attempt was made to number the provinces in geographical groups; onshore, offshore, and combined on and offshore."

Extractions: Text only version: CENTRAL Residents' desire for a greater share of revenue from the shipping and copra industries based in Central Province fuels a drive for state autonomy within a federated Solomon Islands. Central Province is one of the Solomon Islands' major producers of copra. Russel Islands Plantations Ltd., previously known as Lever Solomons Ltd., owns most of Central's copra plantations in. The country's largest copra crushing mill is in Central Province. Other sources of revenue include cattle, cocoa and fisheries. Central Province is home to an international seaport, giving access to container ships. Many residents want more money from the national government in return for the sea-freight services the province provides. The preferred option is for Central Province to become a state within a Federal Republic of Solomon Islands. Extractions: Text only version: LABASA / SAVUSAVU The usually docile northern town of Labasa remains vulnerable following a siege in July 2000 when soldiers supporting coup leader George Speight took over the town's Sukanaivalu army barracks and the main police station , terrorising the town in the process. Speight retains strong support in the south of the island where during the coup, two New Zealand pilots were briefly held hostage in the village of one of the coup plotters ex-Colonel Ilisoni Ligairi. Labasa is the main centre of the northern cane-farming belt where many Indo-Fijian farmers look to Labour leader Mahendra Chaudhry for support as they continue face homelessness through expiring land leases. THE WESTERN CANE BELT SUVA An obvious target for coup plotters - Fiji's political, economic and administrative capital Suva is often at flashpoint and under curfew during coups. Following the takeover of parliament on May 19 last year, shops were burnt and looted, television and radio stations attacked. Soldiers were killed at the military barracks following an army mutiny later in the year. Suva's mix of urban educated professionals, indigenous and Indo-Fijian working class represent a smorgasbord of potential votes for the so-called moderate and nationalist parties alike.

The militants began pouring into the Moluccas in early May after receiving military training at a camp 2,500km away in Java, where the Laskar Jihad are based. Their leader Jaffar Umar Thalib is believed to have close ties to the former regime of ex-dictator Suharto. He has repeatedly warned his group will send 10,000 members to the islands to wage a jihad or holy war.
