Extractions: The Island of St. Martin/St. Maarten For over 300 years, France and the Netherlands have shared this tiny Caribbean island. In fact, St. Martin/St. Maarten is the smallest island in the world to be divided between two sovereign powers. The delightful mix of French, Dutch and Caribbean culture make St. Martin/St. Maarten unique and unlike any other place on earth. A "Melting Pot" in the true sense of the term, more than 100 different nationalities reside on these 37 square miles and over a dozen languages are spoken including French, Dutch, English, German, Papiamento, Creole, Italian, Hindi, Chinese and Afrikaans. The Timeline The earliest inhabitants of St. Martin/St. Maarten, according to archeologists, were Amerindians who settled on the island as long ago as 4000 BC. Around 800 AD, the Arahwaks, another Amerindian group, arrived on St. Martin/St. Martin and the surrounding islands. The peaceful Arahwaks settled in villages, cultivated crops and built boats. Because of its many salt ponds, the Arahwaks called the island "Soualiga", meaning "Land of Salt". According to popular belief, Christopher Columbus "discovered" the island in November 1493 on his second voyage to the New World and named it in honor of Bishop St Martin of Tours. However, some historians now think the island Columbus chanced upon that day was the more southerly Nevis and that he never actually sighted St. Martin/St. Maarten. Although the actual date of the island's discovery by Europeans is debated, every year on 11 November, the feast day of Saint Martin of Tours, island residents celebrate St. Martin/St. Maarten Day.
