Extractions: Thomas Moran established his artistic reputation with his paintings of Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. By 1876 Moran was regarded as one of the major landscape painters of his day, rivaling in stature Albert Bierstadt, who had introduced the panoramic western landscape a decade earlier. Unlike Bierstadt, who painted almost exclusively in oil, Moran also created some of the most dazzling watercolors of the late nineteenth century. Born in England in 1837, Moran moved with his parents to the United States in 1844. His father, a handloom weaver, first settled the family in Baltimore and then Philadelphia. The young Moran received art instruction from his elder brother, Edward, and later was apprenticed to a wood engraver. In 1861 Thomas and Edward went abroad to tour English museums and galleries to study works of other artists, including Joseph Mallord William Turner. Returning to the United States in 1862, Thomas married and settled again in Philadelphia where he opened his own studio. Throughout this period he made excursions into the Pennsylvania countryside to sketch river views.

This exhibition features landscapes, seascapes, portraits, and genre scenes by various members of the Moran family including Thomas Moran and his wife, Mary Nimmo Moran . The Museum is pleased to present an exhibition that addresses the artistry of multiple members of the extended Moran family including painted seascapes, portraits, and genre scenes by Edward , his son Leon , and Peter Moran , brother to Edward and Thomas. An exhibition this inclusive has not occurred in over thirty years. These works demonstrate the importance of smaller paintings, watercolors, and etchings as objects of study and delight. Highlights include: recently discovered watercolors by Thomas Moran and Mary Nimmo Mnran depicting scenes of eastern Long Island, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania; a previously unknown seascape by Edward Moran; and trompe l'oeil imagery by Peter Moran. While contemporary scholarship regards Thomas Moran as the foremost painter in the family, many of the Morans were accomplished artists and held positions of great importance in the late nineteenth century. All of the works on display are from the Worth B. Stottlemyer Collection, Juniata College Museum of Art. Extractions: Thomas Moran apprenticed to a Philadelphia wood engraving firm, but by 1858 at the age of twenty-one, he had exhibited an oil painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Encouraged by the marine painter, James Hamilton, Moran traveled to London in 1861 where he was deeply impressed by the dynamic effects and glowing color of J. M. W. Turner. He also visited France and Italy in 1866 to study the Old Masters, but his early American reputation was gained as an illustrator. In 1871 Moran went west with the Hayden Expedition to record the wonders of the Yellowstone area, making annotated drawings and watercolors later used to illustrate articles in the popular press as well as the official report. Moran's watercolors and his very large oil painting, The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone X 144 inches (1872 National Museum of American Art, lent by the U.S. Department of the Interior), convinced the U. S. Congress to set this area aside as America's first national park.
