LOS ANGELES, (amnnews.com) — The Getty has acquired “The Adoration of the Magi with Saint Anthony Abbot” (about 1390–1410), a rare and masterful example of the International Gothic style that dominated taste across Europe around 1400. The work is one of very few northern European panel paintings of this period in any American museum. The new acquisition will be presented to the public in the exhibition “Fit for a King,” at the Getty Center, June 29–August 29, 2004, which explores the Getty's holdings of works in the International Gothic style.     Extractions: This summer, the Yale Center for British Art—renowned for its collection of works by 18th- and 19th-century British artists—will present an exhibition of paintings, watercolors, prints, drawings, and manuscripts by one of the most neglected British artists of the Romantic period. "The Art of James Ward", on view May 21-August 22, 2004, will feature more than 30 paintings and 60 works on paper, drawn almost entirely from the collections of the Yale Center for British Art. The Indianapolis Museum of Art is engaged in a substantial expansion and renovation project that will increase its gallery space by 50 percent, significantly enhance the quality and scale of visitor amenities, and expand the range of offerings it provides on its spacious and handsomely landscaped 152-acre campus. In many ways, this is not unusual for museums in the last few years, as many of them chose to pursue ambitious plans for expansion. One feature that distinguishes the effort in Indianapolis is the stated commitment to accessibility. This concept was articulated in the strategic plan, completed in 1996, that underlies the planning for the expanded facility. That concept remained uppermost when I joined the IMA staff two years ago, and continued to be cited when major construction began in mid-2002. But what did we mean by accessibility? How did it shape our thinking, and how has it affected our plans?
