Extractions: Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico students team up on satellite project Students from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Arizona State University and New Mexico State University are teaming up in a unique space project to design, build and fly three identical satellites in formation. The primary goal of the mission, dubbed Three-Corner Sat, is to obtain stereo images of small, quickly changing space phenomena like cloud formations, pollution plumes, and sand or dust storms, said Colorado Space Grant Consortium Director Elaine Hansen. Three-Corner Sat is a joint effort of the three universities, NASA and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. The Three-Corner Sat mission is being developed by CU-Boulder, which is responsible for mission control, science, the command and data-handling system and camera imaging systems. ASU students are developing the structure, power and attitude control systems, while NMS is building the communication system. The six-sided, 35-pound satellites each about 18 inches across and 10 inches deep will be launched in 2002 via space shuttle in a "stack" formation. Released at roughly 250 miles above Earth, the stack will separate and the three satellites slowly will drift apart.

Jeiza Fernandes already speaks more languages than many Americans, and now she's trying to add to a list that includes Cape Verdean Creole and Portuguese. ADVERTISEMENT "When I grow up I want to teach other students how to speak English," said Jeiza, a sixth-grader at Brockton's Belmont Street School, where she enrolled in September after moving from Cape Verde, a group of islands off the West African coast. Her teacher, Soraya Andrade, says 11-year-old Jeiza is one of the best students in her "English immersion" class. English immersion, required in Massachusetts schools under a 2002 ballot initiative, aims to force-feed English to immigrant children. It replaces a system that taught core subjects in native languages while also giving students English-language instruction. The new law says that after one year of all-English instruction, children should be moved into regular classes. Critics said the old system hurt children, mostly lower-income city kids, because it took up to three years to get them ready for regular classes. But as this school year draws to a close, educators are coming to believe that a one-year limit set by the immersion law isn't realistic.

USA 24 May 2004 Lynnfield, MA - Sophos, a world leader in protecting organizations against spam and viruses, today announced a new K-12 education program focused on delivering effective, cost-sensitive anti-virus, anti-spam and policy enforcement solutions that meet the unique needs of the K-12 market. As K-12 schools become more dependent on technology as an important part of their learning environment, they become more susceptible to the growing number of destructive viruses and spam that are plaguing the internet. Many schools must address and maintain technologies and do so within restricted budgets and with limited staff. Sophos affords schools with the ideal combination of flexible pricing, which includes unlimited technical support, ease of integration, proven performance and continuous maintenance that address the specific needs of the K-12 academic environment. Recognizing that schools have a responsibility to meet compliancy with regulatory agencies and commissions, such as the COPA Commission, a congressionally appointed panel mandated by the Child Online Protection Act (COPA), Sophos PureMessage, a comprehensive, flexible email management solution, helps schools set proactive internal controls for ensuring compliance, enabling network administers to define, configure, monitor, and enforce their message-handling policies easily.

All state government agencies are currently being surveyed about their information and telecommunications infrastructure needs. This joint effort of the Department of Administration, the new Telecommunication Policy Office, and the state's total quality management managers will produce a plan to integrate the state's networks into one shared backbone, and decide how to contract for telecommunications services in a way that reduces redundancy and gets the state "out of the telecommunications business," according to one participant. In addition, the director of the Telecommunications Policy Office and the state's chief information officer are working closely to develop an action plan for Arizona's information infrastructure. The legislature's Arizona Corporation Commission has rules pending that will establish a formal Arizona Universal Service Fund. If approval is granted, Arizona will join some 16 other states with similar programs. The Governor's Commission for the Study of the Telecommunications and Information Industry in Arizona was created by Executive Order 94-12, issued in July 1994. The commission consisted of representatives of the governor's office, the departments of administration and commerce, the Senate and the House of Representatives, the Arizona State Public Information Network, and the state economic development agency. In March 1995 the commission published its final report

AFT: New Members: K-12 Teachers: Charter Schools charter schools provide more accountability and efficiency than traditional publicschools, recent studies of charter schools in arizona, California, Michigan http://www.aft.org/newmembers/k12/charter.html
Extractions: Charter schools Charter schools are supposed to allow parents and teachers to develop publicly funded schools with the flexibility to be innovative and free of rules and regulations that stifle creativity. The charter school movement has grown from one school in Minnesota in 1992 to about 1,100 charter schools across the country today. Currently, 36 states and the District of Columbia have legislation authorizing the creation of charter schools. The notion of what constitutes a charter school continues to evolve. The original idea for charter schools envisioned a group of teachers, perhaps with the help of parents, developing a plan for a school and applying for a charter from the local school board. Charter schools might have a specific academic focus (e.g., math and science or the arts) or employ specific teaching techniques or target a specific group of students (e.g., at-risk). These charter schools would operate as part of the local public school district, supported by public education funds. However, many charter schools depart from this original vision. If the goal is improved student achievement, students in some charter schools are not faring very well. Studies of charter schools in Texas and Arizona show that there has been no evidence of improved student performance among charter school students. A 1998 UCLA study of California charter schools found that charter schools rarely had clearly defined goals or standards and none was "doing more with less" money. In addition, the charter schools exerted considerable control over the types of students they serve. Unlike other public schools, theyre not taking all comers. In Michigan, researchers found that because of weak monitoring efforts, poorly performing charter schools are not likely to be closed.

Extractions: Guadalupe is a Yaqui Native American and Hispanic community between Phoenix and Tempe at the base of South Mountain. The town proudly maintains a strong cultural and ethnic identity. It is named for the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of Mexico. Guadalupe was founded by Yaqui Indians around the turn of the century. The Yaquis' had fled their traditional homeland along the Yaqui River in Sonora to avoid persecution and enslavement by the Mexican government under Porforio Diaz. Many Yaquis entered Arizona and several villages were established. Over the years many Hispanic families have also located in Guadalupe. The town of Guadalupe was incorporated in 1975 and is approximately one square mile in area. It will remain this size since it is "surrounded" by man-made boudaries; Interstate 10 and the city of Phoenix on the west; Baseline Road and the city of Tempe on the North; the city of Tempe on the South; and by the Salt River Project's Highline Canal on the East.
