The years between birth and age 5 are the most important for a child's brain growth and development. During this period children are adjusting and becoming more familiar with the world around them. The actual growth of the brain occurs at this time and a foundation for learning has begun. It is during this time that a child's education and quality of care has the most impact. School Readiness Task Force - comprised mostly of business leaders and some early childhood experts, focused on issues surrounding the financing of an early care and education system in Arizona. A report containing recommendations in the areas of quality, governance, and finance is currently being published.

Arts Education Standards Arizona Arts Standards Arizona Arts Standards - The Arizona Arts Standards set the goals that all students will achieve at the essentials level in the four arts disciplines (music, visual arts, theatre and dance) and at the proficiency level in at least one art form on or before graduation. All levels build upon previous levels. Standards identify what our children must know and be able to do. Thus, the vision embedded in these Standards insists that a mere nodding acquaintance with the arts is not enough to sustain our children's interest or involvement in them. The Standards must usher each new generation onto the pathway of engagement, which opens in turn onto a lifetime of learning and growth throughout the arts. It is along this pathway that our children will find their personal directions and make their singular contributions. It is along this pathway as well that they will discover who they are, and even more, who they can become.

If enacted, the regional accrediting agencies would use the guidelines to set standards for granting accreditation to distance-education programs and institutions." "Representatives of the six U.S. regional accrediting bodies have finalized a set of recommendations for building and evaluating online-education programs. But the recommendations won't become accreditation standards, says Charles M. Cook, the director of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges' Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. 'We've always considered them testimonials, not a new set of standards,' he says. 'It's always been the local regions' option of how to adopt them.'"

Valley of the Sun United Way has formed a steering committee of West Valley representatives for a West Valley Community Scan funded by the Stardust Foundation. The focus of the committee is to conduct an initial scan of community conditions as they relate to social services. The scan will help gain a snapshot of the community as a whole as well as establish a baseline of current services in relation to population. Local community meetings, research and service examination are underway and will continue throughout the scan. The results will provide baseline data that will enable the community to develop a platform by the end of the year that will help Valley of the Sun United Way, government, nonprofits, business and other interested parties plan the future delivery of human services in the West Valley. On Wednesday, May 26 the steering committee gathered to develop an action plan that includes collaboration with the Department of Economic Security (DES) and several nonprofit organizations, including the Arizona Interfaith Network, Buckeye and Surprise, and Arizona State University West. During the meeting, the partners developed the initial design of the scan and a timeline. Updates on the progress of the scan will be provided throughout the next six months and on our website at
