    Extractions: From Skyscrapers to Barns and Everything in Between By Paulette Campbell Virginia's most enduring legact lies in its architecture, says Richard Guy Wilson, a professor at the University of Virginia, far more than through painting, literature, or any other traditional art form. He mentions Mount Vernon and Monticello as two of the most famous historic houses in the country, and cites Colonial Williamsburg as the touchstone for understanding life in the eighteenth century. But there are unexpected architectural treasures to be found, he says, among the county courthouses, the rural churches, the Civil War cemeteries, and even the shopping malls. They are all part of a new guidebook: Buildings of Virginia: Tidewater and Piedmont Structures both famous and obscure can be found on its pages. There is Pear Valley on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, a one-room, yeoman farmer’s cottage believed to date from 1740 with a chimney that measures ten feet across at the base. A number of churches are included, among them St. Luke’s Church in Isle of Wight County, the earliest surviving Anglican church in the state. Anglicanism had been the state’s official religion until disestablishment in 1786. Another, Christ Church in Lancaster County, dating from pre-Revolutionary Virginia, offers testimony to the power of the patron, in this case Robert “King” Carter. “In churches such as this . . . the local gentry would express their status by having their family pews raised higher than those of the lesser members of the congregation,” Wilson writes. Still another is the Third Street Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Richmond, which dates back to 1859, a reminder of the existence of a sizable free black population in the state before the Civil War.

There is no record of a barn being built specifically for horses until 1870, however. Photographs suggest that some of the early structures were probably used for horses as well as cattle. First Horse Barn, 1870-1900. The need for the first building designated as a horse stable was endorsed by the Iowa State College trustees as early as 1868 and an appropriation of $2,500 was made by the legislature the same year. Construction was not started until 1870, however. The barn was 30 x 40 feet with loft and basement and built of brick. Apparently, design and construction were accomplished by College employees in that no architect or contractor are noted in records. This barn was razed in 1900 and replaced with a brick structure that would serve as the horse barn until it was remodeled in 1930-1931 for use by the Landscape Architecture Department. Dairy Barns On March 22, 1858, Governor of Iowa Ralph P. Lowe signed the legislative bill establishing the State Agricultural College and Model Farm. The bill provided for a board of trustees to manage the model farm and college to be developed. At the time, the site of the institution was not determined and in the spring of 1859 the trustees addressed the location issue. Several Iowa communities presented proposals to the trustees. Residents of Story and Boone counties presented an attractive proposal to locate the new institution at a site west of Squaw Creek and downtown Ames. The proposal included significant gifts of land and funding to assist in developing the College site. The Story County site was selected by the trustees on June 21, 1859. The first concern was establishing the model farm specified in the legislation. Priority was given to two buildings. A farm house and livestock barn were both considered essential as a beginning, and construction of these two started in 1860. Construction of Old Main, the first academic building, was delayed until 1865. The delay was thought to be due, in part at least, to economic conditions related to the Civil War. Architectural Treasures Many of the Iowa State barns reflected a common thread in architectural style. To some extent this was because a limited number of architects did the designs. In addition, function of the facilities dictated common elements of design. While each building was different in detail, all had to meet standard functions for housing animals and the storage of feed resources. In viewing the buildings over the years and in looking at pictures of those long since buried as dusty rubble in unmarked graves, there are common threads that characterize the buildings. They were modest in size, usually rather austere in internal finish, simple and functional in design and in the case of the major barns were built of durable materials. As these served over the years they remained straight and true and, even though often neglected in terms of maintenance, were strong in frame and ready for refurbishing when their turn came.

    Extractions: Jenny Gossow's vision for this 1870s barn on Manchester Road in Des Peres transforms it into an entry and locker facility for a proposed new municipal pool. For most motorists cruising down Manchester Road, the old barn tucked behind a neighborhood bar is likely to be nothing more than a red blur in their peripheral vision. But for Jenny Gossow, a master's degree candidate in the School of Architecture, the 1870s barn represents a piece of our heritage that not only should be preserved, but also could be adapted for public use. As her final architectural design project, Gossow made a design proposal to restore the barn, which is less than a mile from Interstate 270, and convert it for use by the city of Des Peres' Department of Parks and Recreation. Currently in relatively shabby condition and completely surrounded by a parking lot, the barn is one of four period buildings clustered together on Manchester Road, amid ubiquitous strip malls. Not far from the West County Center mega-mall, the privately owned barn is more akin to Des Peres Park, which lies just to the north. After consulting with Parks and Recreation officials, Gossow decided to propose a new municipal pool with the barn transformed into the main entryway and locker room facility. Her design also calls for removing the fence separating the barn from the park and completely re-landscaping the surrounding asphalt.

The exhibit is free and open to the public. The center piece of farm operations, the barn evolved out of a need for animal shelter, grain and feed storage, and machinery protection.
