In 1888 she was elected member of the American Institute of Architects and in 1889 she was named a fellow of this organization. In 1891 she published an article "Women of Architecture" in Inland Architect and News Record . She also worked hard in support of legislation for licensing of architects. In 1892-93 Bethune was invited to compete in the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Columbus's voyage to the New World. After becoming an architect, he joined the Nazi Party in 1931. From 1933 to 1942, Speer designed monuments and decorations for rallies to promote the Nazi government. Sometimes called 'the first architect of the Third Reich', he was Hitler's chief architect in Nazi Germany. Perhaps the most familiar of his designs are the Nuremberg parade grounds seen in Leni Riefenstahl's propaganda film, Triumph of the Will. He also planned the post-war rebuilding of Berlin, which was to become the capital of an enlarged German state - Germania. In 1942 Hitler made him Minister responsible for Armaments and War Production. Speer greatly increased weapons output and was responsible for the use of slave labour in German factories. He was also ordered to work out the logistics of the "final solution of the Jewish question," making him a key figure in the perpetration of the Holocaust. By March 1945, it was obvious Germany had lost the war. Hitler did not want enemy troops to use Germany's industries, and so he ordered Speer to have the German Army destroy the industries. Speer knew the German people would need the industries after the war, and he refused to obey Hitler's order - risking his life in the process.

He worked with an architectural firm while attending architecture school. In 1975, he opened his own office. "Since he opened his office, Nouvel has worked to create a stylistic language separate from that of modernism and post-modernism. Rejecting the strict obedience to Le Corbusier that had stifled much of modern architecture, Nouvel initiates each project with his mind cleared of any preconceived ideas. Although he may borrow from traditional forms, he creates a building that stretches beyond traditional constraints." Great Buildings Online In 1981 Jean Nouvel won the competition for a series of "great projects" requested by Francois Mitterrand, the French President. In 1987 he was awarded the "Grand Prix d'Architecture" for his whole body of work and the "Equerre d'Argent" for his design work on minimalist pieces of furniture. Nouvel became the vice-president of the Institut Frençais d'Architecure in 1991, and has been an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects since 1993. Nouvel has received a number of prestigious awards for his work, including the Equerre d'Argent for the best French building for both his Institut de Monde Arabe (1987) and the Lyon Opera House (1993), the medal of Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Arts et Lettres (1983), as well as the silver medal of the Academie d'Architecture (1983), the Grand Prix d'Architecture (1987) and Special mention for the Aga Khan Prize (1987).

A contemporary two-story building of metal, glass and stone, Maki's design includes three galleries, a multi-use Forum, film and video theater, and administrative offices. Fumihiko Maki, 65, was educated at the University of Tokyo, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and the Harvard Graduate School of Design, where he later served as Associate Professor. Maki has a distinguished international reputation as one of Japan's leading architects, where his projects include the Spiral, Fujisawa Metropolitan Gymnasium, and Tepia Science Pavilion in Tokyo; the Iwasaki Art Museum, Ibusuki City, Kagoshima; Nihon Convention Center, Makuhari, Chiba; and the National Museum of Modern Art in Kyoto. Famed for his designs for public buildings, Fumihiko Maki has received numerous international awards for architecture that reflects a deep commitment to the vitality of community life, while exploring the fragmented and complex nature of contemporary society. With an emphasis on public spaces and public use, Maki's structures often blur clear distinctions between the building's interior and the world outside its walls.

Pp. xii, 345, illus. $115.00 Reviewed by Annmarie Adams McGill University Just what we don't need: another biography of a nineteenth-century Toronto architect. This was my initial reaction to Geoffrey Simmins's Fred Cumberland: Building the Victorian Dream. Indeed, with a few notable exceptions, the field of Canadian architectural history is constructed almost solely of the life stories of relatively famous architects of late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Toronto and Montreal. Implicit in nearly all their biographies is the suggestion that each man deserves attention as the true progenitor of a Canadian style. Frederic William Cumberland (1820-1881) shares much with these other celebrated Canadian architects. Most of his buildings can be found in Toronto. He established important client networks through key social institutions, in his case Toronto's Mechanics' Institute and the Canadian Institute, designing buildings for them as a way of showcasing his considerable talents. He specialized in particular building types: houses, educational buildings, churches, post offices, and courthouses. And he and his partners prospered during a time period in which wealthy and powerful Canadians - he designed houses for Egerton Ryerson and Casimir Gzowski, among others - used architectural form, quite intentionally, to define themselves.

However, in June, 1314, the Scots lead by King Robert defeated King Edward II English Army at the Battle of Bannockburn and the decline of English power over Scotland started to come to end. In 1320 the Declaration of Arbroath was written by the Earls and Barons of Scotland to the Pope, in recognition of the cause of independence of Scotland from English rule. Until his death in 1329 Robert and the Scots spent many years fighting the English until the Treaty of Edinburgh in 1328, where England recognized Scotland's Independence. His son David II succeeded the throne and became King in 1329 at the age of five. Robert "The" Bruce is long remembered as "The Bruce" and "Good King Robert" who won Scotland's Independence.
