Archery rules on shooting at outdoor archery targets. Modifications can be made to facilitatesuccessful inclusion of this individual into recreational participation. http://www.abilityonline.org.uk/sport/sport_archery.htm
Extractions: Archery Athlete eligibility and classification Paralympic competition is limited to athletes with cerebral palsy, spinal injuries and other lower limb impairments, and les autres conditions; however, athletes with other disabilities also enjoy archery. Archers in the Paralympic Games compete in wheelchair and standing classifications. Playing area The playing field is designed similar to competitions for "able-bodied" athletes. The target is a distance of 294 feet (90 meters) away from archer. The maximum target size is 48 inches in diameter (122 centimeters). The target is divided into ten (10) concentric rings with a golden "bulls eye" or center ring. Rules The rules and scoring protocol are the same as those utilized in the Olympic games. Points are earned for each arrow striking the target. Archers score ten points if he/she hits the bulls eye and one point if they hit the outer ring. The closer the archer's arrow lands to the bulls eye, the more points earned. Equipment Sport-specific equipment . Paralympic athletes use a recurve bow. Recurves are made of wood, graphite, fiberglass, or carbon composites. Arrows are either carbon graphite or aluminum. Bow lengths and weights vary considerably. Bow lengths vary from four to six feet. It is generally recommended that persons in wheelchairs and children utilize a 48-inch bow. Additionally, the following draw-weight guide can be utilized to assist in fitting an athlete to a bow: children under 10 years should use a 10 to 15 pound bow, 10-12 year olds should use a 15 to 20 pound bow, women and teenage girls should use a 20 to 30 pound bow, and teenage boys and men should use a 30 to 40 pound bow. Individuals wishing to hunt start with bows weighing between 40 and 50 pounds.
Extractions: by Doug Engh How do you promote archery to newcomers? By joining forces with other like-minded organizations. And how do you teach 34 NAA Level 1 archery instructor participants all at once? By scheduling a Level 2 course along side it. Excitement is so high, that Roy feels over 120 schools will commit to it before the end of the year. The summer training took place in a middle school gymnasium in Frankfort, KY over three days. The concept was to bring in the Level 2 candidates for the first day, and having them actually participate in training the Level 1s the following two days in addition to their own continuing training. The seven Level 2 candidates (several of whom were KYFW personnel including Roy Grimes and his new state archery coordinator Jenny Richardson) spent the first day learning how to shoot using Mathews Genesis compound bows. The Kentucky school program adopted the Genesis bows to be used in all the participating schools, so a sufficient quantity of the bows were on hand for the instructor training. The Level 2 candidates practiced shooting form, learned how to coach and correct each others form, and learned range safety.

3-D Archery: A Guide To Course Design Introduction. recreational archery has the potential to be a dangeroussport. Bows and arrows are, by design, lethal. archery ranges http://regimentalrogue.tripod.com/products/3dcourse.htm
Extractions: GO HOME Introduction Are Our Ranges Safe? A Guide to Course Construction ... About the Author Introduction Recreational archery has the potential to be a dangerous sport. Bows and arrows are, by design, lethal. Archery ranges and 3-D courses designed when "fast" bows shot 200 feet per second may not be safe today. Arrows which miss targets may endanger other archers on the range, or may fly onto property which the archery club does not control. New and redesigned ranges must be prepared to handle today's "fast bows" shooting in excess of 300 feet per second. I wonder when I speak to some archery club executives about range safety and discover incomplete or poor awareness of the possible dangers. The comments "You're not supposed to miss" and "Our course is designed for the unlimited [top] archer (implying that our' shooters don't miss)" are surprising for their alarming indication that safety is often NOT a primary consideration in the design of archery ranges and courses. The design of an archery range may be undertaken by any archer with a basic understanding of the fundamentals of safe design. Many years of shooting experience and/or a successful hunting record may help, but are certainly not necessary. 3-D Archery, A Guide to Course Construction can provide the guidance to a new course designer, and it can refresh the knowledge of the experienced designer to help assess and improve, or design from scratch, an archery course.

Extractions: Bow Poundage will vary depending on the purpose of the equipment and the age and strength of the archer. FOR RECREATIONAL SHOOTING: Adults: Generally adults shooting recreational equipment will use equipment that is 25# pull and up. Since the arrow need only penetrate the target face to do it's job heavy poundage is not necessary. A first time male archer would probably enjoy a 30# to 45# recurve or a 40# to 60# compound bow. Women usually can handle a 25# to 35# recurve or a 30# to 45# compound bow. Keep in mind that the muscles used to pull a bow usually aren't developed when you begin shooting so the bow you choose may be a bit difficult to draw at first but after several shooting sessions the bow will become more comfortable. Youth: Generally youths shooting recreational equipment will use 20# equipment and up. Boys and Girls alike will develop their pulling strength very quickly and keep in mind that a recurve bows pull weight is measured at a pulling distance of 28". Most youth at the ages of 8 to 12 years old have a pulling distance much shorter than 28" therefore the actual bow pulling weight will be much less than the weight listed for the bow. In some cases a youth at the age of 8 would only pull a recurve bow marked at 25# about 15# to 18# . This is a great thing for youth archers because as they grow they will pull the bow back further and in effect the bow will pull harder making a recurve bow a wonderful type of bow to "grow" with a young archer.
