News AntiDoping tests in archery, recreational or elite? archery is predominantlya recreational sport, which can be played by young and old alike. http://www.archery.org/fita_committees/medical/article_doping_english.htm
Extractions: Anti-Doping tests in Archery, recreational or elite? Archery is predominantly a recreational sport, which can be played by young and old alike. It does not require a great deal of athleticism to achieve a certain level of scores and thus many recreational archers may participate in the sport while suffering from chronic medical conditions. The problem arises when someone on prescribed medication participates in a local or national tournament and is randomly selected by doping control for testing. The archer may not even realise that the medication that their doctor prescribed was listed by the IOC or by FITA as a drug which cannot be used by an archer in competition. What to do? FITA makes provision in world tournaments for archers to notify the FITA medical committee what prescribed medications are being taken 21 days in advance of competition so that they may be notified whether or not they may compete while on those medications. It is recommended that National Member Associations make similar arrangements for their recreational archers who take part in local and National tournaments. While it is not the intention of FITA to penalise the recreational archer by its anti-doping policy it is likely that the political intention of National Anti-Doping authorities will trap the unwary.

Extractions: HISTORY OF ARCHERY Archery is one of the oldest arts still practised. This history will not only take you through a journey on the evolution of archery, but also through the history of mankind. Indeed, both are closely linked. Evidence of ancient archery has been found throughout the world, even in Australia where it had previously been thought that the bow had not been used. In 1200 BC , the Hittites would use the bow from light, fast chariots that enabled them to become dreaded opponents in Middle Eastern battles. Their neighbours, the Assyrians used archery extensively. They built bows from several different types of material : tendon, horn and wood. They also gave the bow a new, recurved shape that was far more powerful and as it was shorter, it was more easily handled by an archer on horseback. In China, archery dates back to the Shang dynasty (1766-1027 BC). A war chariot of that time carried a three-man team : driver, lancer and archer. During the ensuing Zhou (Chou) dynasty (1027-256 BC), nobles at court attended sport archery tournaments that were accompanied by music and interspersed with elegant salutations.

Extractions: Olympic History From prehistoric times, the bow was a principal weapon of war and of the hunt throughout the world, except in Australia. Some authorities date the origin of archery as early as the Aurignacian period, about 25,000 years before the modern era. The earliest people known to have used the bow and arrow were the ancient Egyptians, who adopted the weapon at least 5000 years ago. In the time of the earliest pharaohs, the Egyptians practiced archery in hunting, as well as in warfare against the ancient Persians, who were then equipped only with spears and slingshots. Recreational archery was also practiced, among the ancient Egyptians and Greeks, one instance of the latter being the competition in which Odysseus won the hand of Penelope. Soon after, however, the bow and arrow was used extensively in the ancient world. The Assyrians and Babylonians depended on the weapon, and the Old Testament refers several times to archery as a characteristic skill of the ancient Hebrews. A.D. Military Usage
