Archeology - The Presidio Trust We are also in the process of organizing a program for primary schoolage kids to come and learn about archeology at the Presidio. http://www.presidiotrust.gov/park/currentprojects.asp
Extractions: Doyle Drive Utility Trench 1912 map of the Presidio, made by the Office of the Constructing Quartermaster On Tuesday, July 10, 2001 a utilities crew working underneath Doyle Drive by the Gorgas Street warehouses unearthed a large deposit of ceramics. The ceramic deposit, mostly broken sherds, represents materials from both the Quartermaster Department and decorated tableware. Trust archeologists identified a layer of burned soil and artifacts just above the ceramic deposit and excavated both deposits in stratigraphic succession. Museum specialists at the Trust's Archeology lab are currently researching and cataloging this large deposit of Quartermaster Depot ceramics. Some ceramic fragments we found during the cataloging process had maker's marks which identify the country and company where the ceramic piece was manufactured. These maker's marks help us to date the deposit and offer clues about what kinds of activities people were engaging in during certain time periods. When we find a piece of ceramic with a mark on it, we can look up information about the company in a number of different reference books. Here are a few examples of ceramic maker's marks we found during the Doyle Drive trench project. This company, "Edwin M. Knowles" was established in 1900 in West Virginia. Edwin Knowles produced "very fine dinnerware" until 1963 when the Newell, West Virginia plant closed down. The numbers located below the mark, "17-2-3" represent the year and factory number where the piece was manufactured. We know for certain this piece was produced in 1917, what we don't know is when the piece was actually thrown away. By examining other artifacts found in the deposit, we can come up with a date range which reflects the probable date of deposit.

Archeology OAS kids Day Saturday, August 16, 2003 Throughout the day, kids can learn about theworld of historic archaeology by participating in handson demonstrations. http://www.bonnecherepark.on.ca/html/programs/archaeology.html
Extractions: Each year in conjunction with the Ontario Archaeological Society (OAS) Ottawa Chapter , the Friends host various public archaeological workshops, digs and conferences in and around Bonnechere Park. Archaeology is the study of the physical remains of past human cultures. At Bonnechere, the focus is on historic archaeology which encompases the period following the first European contact with Natives or subsequent to the arrival of Samuel de Champlain in the Ottawa Valley post-1600 more or less. Join archaeologists at Lafleur Homestead and step back into history on a guided tour of built heritage sites along the Little Bonnechere River. Lafleur has been a good place to stay for hundreds of years: in the late 1800s settlement farmers built this home and early Canadian loggers used it as stopping place as they travelled to and from Basin Depot.
