Many are designed on a grand scale, but there are also lots of smaller gardens full of the old-fashioned intimacy of a country cottage. The passion for plants and flowers never ceases. Look out for colourful displays in towns as well as villages. Some gardens are open to visitors all through the year. Many others are opened especially, under the National Gardens and Red Cross Schemes. Every year, whole villages arrange open days in this way - look out for these special opportunities to look and to enjoy. Please go to the VR of Westonbirt Arboretum for a sample of Cotswolds Gardens. Click on the garden names for more details. I'll be travelling from Santa Barbara to San Diego. What do you recommend? Follow-Up Postings: What about Balboa Park in San Diego? Maybe that is too obvious but I love it there. Quail Botanical Gardens in Encinitas is another. Here is a link that might be useful: Quail Botanical Gardens Lotusland in Santa Barbara, though not a arboretum in the strict sense, is a botanic garden that should be visited by anyone in the vicinity (advance reservations required - sometimes by months - very limited attendance). A small botanic garden at UCLA (Mildred Mathias) has many mature trees from around the world, and the campus itself has many more identified exotic trees. RE: Arboreta from S. Barbara to S. Diego?

Extractions: BOTANIC GARDENS AND ARBORETA h o m e p h i l o s o p h y p r o j e c t s p e r s o n n e l Blandy Experimental Farm and the State Arboretum of Virginia Boyce, Virginia Nelson-Byrd was invited to prepare the first comprehensive 50-year master plan for the University of Virginia's Blandy Experimental Farm in Boyce, Virginia. Blandy is a multi-faceted 700 acre property that attracts visitors, students and scientists. At its heart lies the 172 acre State Arboretum of Virginia which draws 70,000 visitors a year. A biological research station attracts scientists from around the world. The challenge was to create a plan that acknowledged the evolving focus of Blandy Farm in three broad categories: University research and education, outreach and environmental education, and curation of plant collections and display gardens. The master plan creates a rich series of experiences for the visitor and resident that weave the Arboretum, research, and unique cultural and physiogeographic characteristics of the site together. The program includes siting of a 15,000 s.f. Education Center, a parking garden, a drive with eight destinations highlighting places of particular interest, bicycle paths, a bridle trail, and an extensive network of walking paths.
