Extractions: April is a busy month for the environment with Earth Day taking place worldwide on April 22 and Arbor Day being celebrated in Pennsylvania and many other states on April 25. Do you have anything planned? Well, if not, here are a few ideas for service-learning and character education projects that promote both of these holidays and environmental education, in general: Young children really enjoy cutting and pasting! Gather some old newspapers, magazines, fabric and other notions, and have your students create Earth Day collages! Prior to starting their collage, introduce your students to the recycled items used in the collage. To help encourage recycling in the school with other students and classrooms, designate a wall in the school as the Earth Day Wall. In addition to hanging all of your students' Earth Day collages, display other information related to the environment such as pollution, littering, water conservation and wildlife. Introduce concepts of environmental responsibility through recycling to include a character education component.
