Placement exams will be administered to all students at the beginning of the program in order to assess the level best suited to their Arabic language ability. Each level provides a six -week total immersion into the Arabic language that consists of 25 hours a week of intensive classroom instruction. Colloquial Arabic in the Lebanese dialect is integrated in the program. The program combines classroom instruction with cultural field trips within Beirut and around Lebanon. The total of 160 hours is the equivalent of 8 credit hours at AUB, which may be transferred to other universities. Apart from attending classes, students should expect to spend at least 4 extra hours a day on homework and an additional 2 hours a day on non-recreational activities related to the program such as lectures, clubs, and so forth. Students admitted to the CAMES Summer Arabic Program are required to take a pledge at the start of the Program to use Arabic as their only language of communication. The pledge is taken very seriously and will be compulsory during classes and during all activities, recreational and non-recreational, related to the program.
